    Overview

    The current extramural funding environment for grant applications is hypercompetitive, however many proposals are submitted without undergoing an internal review process.

    In order to assist investigators who are submitting competitive grant applications, the Fertitta Family College of Medicine offers an internal pre-review process for our faculty to increase funding success of our grant applications.

    The timetable for internal reviews is listed below.

    Written feedback using a modified NIH Summary Statement format will be provided.

    Following the internal peer review, an opportunity will be provided for investigators to discuss strategies for addressing issues raised in the review process.

    Eligibility

    All Fertitta Family College of Medicine faculty who are planning to submit NIH applications are eligible to participate in the IRG. Early career faculty and new investigators are strongly encouraged to utilize the process.

    Structure

    The Internal Review Program operates year-round as follows:

    • Investigator completes the grant submission form AT LEAST 3 weeks before the reviews are needed;
    • In addition to the standing review group members, an additional reviewer with content expertise will be identified as needed;
    • Investigator electronically submits their grant for review AT LEAST 2 weeks before the reviews are needed;
    • The Fertitta Family College of Medicine Office of Research will send the grant to the reviewers to provide their anonymous feedback within 2 weeks using the standard NIH Review Template;
    • Reviewers will return their anonymous reviews to the Fertitta Family College of Medicine Office of Research (Watts) in advance of the IRG session.
    • Following the IRG session, the Fertitta Family College of Medicine Office of Research will send anonymous reviews to the investigator.

    Reviewers

    An Internal Review Group has been established that includes the Associate Dean for Research (ADR), Olivera Nesic-Taylor, Ph.D. and Winston Liaw, M.D., MPH.  Jasmyne Watts, MPH serves as the Program Coordinator.

    Formalization of the program will allow for reviewers to get credit for their participation in the annual review process.

    Success of the program depends upon serious critical review, equivalent to what occurs at an actual NIH Study Section therefore the review process will be a closed meeting.

    Anticipated Benefits

    Anticipated benefits of the program include increased funding of research applications, better mentoring of junior faculty, increased cross-disciplinary research communication, increased voice for research at the institutional level, high-quality research at Fertitta Family College of Medicine and increased research opportunities for our students.

  • Writing Accountability Groups (WAGs)

    A WAG is an active writing group that meets once a week over a 10-week block and follows a strict agenda of 15 minutes of updates and goal setting followed by 30 minutes of individual writing, and then 15 minutes of reporting and wrap-up.

    WAGs are intended to provide support and writing accountability for faculty members to establish a regular writing time and to increase scientific productivity.

    • A small group (4-8) of faculty who are interested in building a strong platform and routine for their writing skills. This is done with the accountability of like-minded individuals who meet for one hour each week over the course of seven to ten weeks.
    • The virtual meetings are usually divided in components:
      • Provide Updates (15 min)
      • Set Goals (30 min)
      • Report Out (15 min)
    • These groups do not involve peer reviewing, but a basis for qualified and quantified processes of your writing as a professional.
    • Through this process participants will gain enhanced writing skills, improved time management, increased productivity and establish relationships with other writers(Writing Accountability Groups (WAGs), 2020).
