Purpose

To provide medical students with the opportunity to conduct original research under the guidance of faculty members in the Biomedical Sciences Department of the College of Medicine, while learning about the importance of research and the scientific method.

 

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be a medical student currently enrolled in the Tilman J Fertitta Family College of Medicine in good academic standing and have a strong interest in biomedical research.

Program Details

  • The Biomedical Sciences Summer Research Program at the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine offers a unique opportunity for medical students to conduct biomedical research with a Biomedical Sciences faculty member and enrich their academic experience. The program spans 8-10 weeks during the summer with participants dedicating full-time efforts to their research projects including weekly meetings with mentors. Students are expected to present their research at Student Research Day event at the conclusion of the program. 

  • In addition to contributing to the advancement of biomedical knowledge, participating medical students will receive a $4000 payment upon successful completion of the 
    program and a $1200 travel reimbursement for those students selected to present their research at a scientific conference. Faculty mentors receive a $4000 budget for lab supplies to support the student project.

Application Process

  • Interested medical students should submit a statement of interest to their selected Biomedical Sciences Faculty mentor (cc’ing Dr. Gregorio Gomez) by Monday, February 16, 
    2026. Students and selected mentors will collaboratively devise a research plan, timeline, and budget for the project, and the application must be submitted by 5pm on February 27, 2026 to ggomez26@central.uh.edu. Final decisions will be determined by feasibility and significance of the proposed research.
