RESIDENCY PROGRAM

A strong residency program is key for future doctors to gain hands-on experience. Our diverse city provides access to numerous and unique patients representing a cross-section of Texas and the United States. Along with educating the future of primary care providers, our goal is to address the shortage of medical doctors in Texas by providing means for graduates to practice in the state.

The Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine and HCA Houston Healthcare offer residency programs in family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology and surgery. This agreement provides the opportunity for future MDs to complete their residency in nationally recognized hospitals and surgical settings, with placements in Houston and the surrounding areas.

HCA Houston Healthcare welcomed inaugural residents into the graduate medical education program with specializations in family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, internal medicine and surgery at the Kingwood and West hospital locations. Resident training hospitals and clinical opportunities will expand through the partnership, over time.

The Powerhouse and HCA Healthcare Form One Mission

  • Provide local and regional residency opportunities for the pipeline of doctors graduating from Fertitta Family College of Medicine
  • Address the increasing need for primary care providers in Houston and Texas by training hundreds of new residents in the next four years
  • Create healthier patient outcomes by exposing residents to diverse health care cases, while working with talented medical teams in the largest U.S. health care system

HCA Houston will provide clinical training sites for our medical students and we hope that many of them will want to complete their residencies within the new graduate medical education training program. Our goal is to train and keep primary care doctors in Texas to address the significant shortage, so it’s a natural fit.

Charting the Future of Primary Care

Together,  Fertitta Family College of Medicine and HCA Houston Healthcare are filling the gap between rural and urban health care demands that will continue to rise as our population increases in age and life expectancy. Primary care focuses on improving the patient’s quality of life. And there is no better place for residents to gain experience than in the nation’s fourth-largest city with one of the most diverse populations, which also serves as the birthplace of tremendous medical innovation.
