Environmental Wellness

An environmentally well individual recognizes that they are dependent on their natural environment just as the environment is dependent on them, and takes action to protect it.

Tips to help Cougars with Environmental Wellness

  1. Living a sustainable life
Take steps to live a life that is more sustainable. One way to get started is conserving water and fuel. A few tips to conserve water is taking shorter showers and turning off the faucet when brushing your teeth. As for conserving fuel, carpool to school or bike to school or work. Visit the Office of Sustainability.

  2. Learn to reduce, reuse, and recycle materials
Reduce: Buy and use less. Buy only what you need and use all of what you buy. A few examples: use a refillable waterbottle, re-use store bags or use reusable bags when grocery shopping. Reuse: Before recycling or disposing of anything consider whether or not you could use it for something else. Examples:  jelly jars can be reused to store leftover foods; Recycle: glass, metal and cans, plastics, cardboard and cartons, paper and newspaper. Also, recycle by purchasing products in material/ packaging that can be readily recycled. For more information on how to reduce, reuse and recycle visit the Office of Sustainability.

  3. Adopt leave-no-trace
Help preserve and conserve our rich environments heritage by learning and participating in educational and ethical programs. One such program is called Leave No Trace Center. The center strives to educate those who enjoy the outdoors about the nature of their recreational impacts, as well as techniques to prevent and minimize such impacts.

  4. Help with better air quality
Think about air quality when it comes to cars: switch to cleaner fuels, use less fuels, prevent gas leaks, keep your vehicle engine in top condition, and buy fuel-efficient cars. Think about air quality when it comes to your home: make your home a smoke-free home, burn less fossil fuels, do not burn garbage or building materials, and plant trees or a garden by your home.
