SPAN 1502: Elementary Spanish II

Cr. 5. (3-2). Prerequisites: SPAN 1501 or equivalent with a minimum grade of C- in twelve months prior or by placement exam. Students with two years or more of high school Spanish within the past five years or heritage learners of Spanish are not eligible to enroll. Credit for SPAN 1502 may not be applied toward a degree by students who have credit for SPAN 1505. Continued basic oral, listening, reading, and writing skills.

SPAN 1505: Intensive Elementary Spanish
Cr. 5. (3-2). Prerequisite: two or more years of high school Spanish within the past five years or placement by exam. Heritage learners not eligible to enroll. Credit for SPAN 1505 may not be applied toward a degree by students who have credit for SPAN 1502. Designed for students who enter with two or more years of high school Spanish or equivalent, but are not prepared to do work at the intermediate level, and students with strong proficiency in another romance language. Intensive practice in oral, listening, reading, and writing skills.

SPAN 1507: Intensive Elementary Spanish for Heritage Learners
Cr. 5. (3-2). Prerequisite: Placement by exam or by Director of Basic Language Program. Designed for students from a Spanish-speaking background. Literacy development in Spanish with emphasis on vocabulary. Intensive reading, writing, and speaking.

SPAN 2301: Intermediate Spanish I

Prerequisite: successful completion of SPAN 1502 or SPAN 1505 with a minimum grade of C- in twelve months immediately prior to enrollment or by placement exam immediately prior to enrollment. Heritage speakers not eligible to enroll. Continued development of oral expression and listening comprehension with increased emphasis on reading and writing skills.

SPAN 2302: Intermediate Spanish II

SPAN 2307: Spanish for Hispanic Heritage Learners I
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: placement by exam or by Director of Basic Language Program. Credit for both SPAN 2307 and SPAN 2301 may not apply to a degree. Designed for Hispanic students and other students from a Spanish-speaking background. Basic skills in reading, spelling, and composition.

SPAN 2308: Spanish for Hispanic Heritage Learners II
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: completion of SPAN 2307 with a minimum of C- or placement exam. Credit for both SPAN 2308 and SPAN 2302 may not apply to degree. Continued development of reading and writing skills, and control of formal Spanish.

SPAN 2309: Spanish for Business
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: successful completion of SPAN 2301 with a minimum grade of C- in 12 months immediately prior to enrollment or by placement exam immediately prior to enrollment. May be substituted for SPAN 2302. Practice in speaking, reading, writing, and translating Spanish in typical business situations. Taught in Spanish.

SPAN 2351: Introduction to Latino Cultural Studies
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: ENGL 1304 or equivalent. Does not apply toward the Spanish major or minor. Applies as elective for minors in Latin American studies or world cultures and literatures. Introduction to latino cultural studies with emphasis on latino migration, urbanization, acculturation and their impacts on family community, identity, and sex roles as expressed in literature as well as visual and performing arts. Taught in English.

SPAN 2398: Independent Study

SPAN 2605: Intensive Intermediate Spanish for Honors
Cr. 6. (6-0). Prerequisite: honors standing and successful completion of SPAN 1505H or score of 400 or higher on Placement Exam immediately prior to enrollment. Intermediate Spanish for potential Spanish majors, minors, and highly-motivated students in other areas of study; development of oral expression and listening comprehension with increased emphasis on reading and writing skills and knowledge of Hispanic cultures.

SPAN 3301: Spanish Oral Communication for Critical Thinking
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 2302 or by placement exam within a semester prior to enrollment. For students who have learned Spanish as a foreign language. Heritage learners of Spanish should enroll in SPAN 3307. Intensive oral practice in groups, class debates and analytical discussions. Exercise critical thinking skills through the analysis of different texts and other forms of cultural production.

SPAN 3302: Advanced Spanish for Non-Heritage Learners
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 2302 in the twelve months prior to enrollment or by placement exam within a semester prior to enrollment. Heritage Learners of Spanish are not eligible to enroll. Cultural and literary readings, composition, and grammar review. Expansion of oral, written, aural, and reading skills through the communicative approach.

SPAN 3305: Spanish Grammar Review
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 2302 or SPAN 2308. Review of the fundamental grammatical structures with an emphasis on those aspects of the language which are problematic for students.

SPAN 3306: Introduction to the Study of the Spanish Language
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 3302 or 3308. Basic concepts of Spanish linguistics.

SPAN 3307: Public Speaking in Spanish
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 2308 or SPAN 3301 or placement by examination. Intensive practice in composition, strategy and delivery of speeches in Spanish. Recommended for students going into the professions, and for professionals who must use Spanish in formal and professional settings.

SPAN 3308: Written Communication for Hispanic Heritage Learners
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 2308 or placement test. Credit for both SPAN 3302 and SPAN 3308 may not apply to a degree. Designed for students from a Spanish-speaking background. Intensive practice in the writing of Spanish in formal and informal styles.

SPAN 3311: Advanced Composition and Creative Writing
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 3302 or 3308 or by placement exam within a semester prior to enrollment. Intensive practice in advanced Spanish writing in a variety of formal and informal styles. Writing production of most common types, from reports to essays to creative works.

SPAN 3312: Fundamentals of English/Spanish Translation
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: SPAN 3301 or SPAN 3307 and SPAN 3302 or SPAN 3308. Development of fundamental skills in translating texts from a variety of genres from English into Spanish and vice versa.

SPAN 3331: Mexican-American Literature
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: SPAN 3301 or SPAN 3307 and SPAN 3302 or SPAN 3308; ENGL 1304. Literature in Spanish language produced by people of Mexican origin in what is today the United States from the Colonial Period to the present.

SPAN 3339: Spanish for the Global Professions
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 2308 or 3302. All-skills course in the language of various professions, formal varieties of Spanish, the lexicon, language structures, and discourse devices required for communicating effectively in the professional world.

SPAN 3341: Language of Business and Trade
