Resources for therapy, psychiatry, social support, and more to support your mental health.

If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, please call 988 to speak with a crisis counselor at the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. They provide free and confidential crisis support and referral.

If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, please call 911.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)- Provides free mental health support services to students. Services include:

  • 24/7 Crisis Support- If you or a UH community member needs mental health crisis support, please call 713-743-5454 anytime. (If you have a life-threatening emergency, dial 911.)
  • Access Visit - Call 713-743-5454 or visit CAPS at Health 2 between 10am and 4pm. You will meet with a counselor for 15-30 minutes to come up with a plan to address your needs, which could include the following:
    • Short-Term Individual Counseling and Couples Counseling- meet with a counselor every two weeks over the course of a semester or shorter to work toward a mental health goal. To seek individual or couples counseling, complete an Access Visit.
    • Group Counseling- meet weekly with a group of students and two counselors for 1.5 hours at a consistent time to get support and/or learn coping strategies. To seek group counseling, ask your individual CAPS counselor or complete an Access Visit.
    • Focused Care Hour- meet once with a counselor for one hour to kick-start your mental health change process.
    • Community Referrals- CAPS can also provide referrals to better meet your needs and has an online list of some community mental health providers they may suggest.
    • Essential Skills Workshops- workshops to provide information on coping skills for anxiety and emotional resilience. Only for CAPS clients- talk to your counselor if you would like to attend.
  • Let’s Talk- brief drop-in consultations with CAPS clinicians about an issue you or someone you care about is facing. See the website for Let’s Talk times and locations.
  • Training for students and staff on crisis intervention and suicide prevention, and workshops by request on a variety of well-being topics.
  • Togetherall and Welltrack Boost are digital resources for social connection and mental health tools, free for UH students.

A.D. Bruce Religion Center- The A.D. Bruce Religion Center is the focal point for many on-campus religious and spiritual activities. It is a bustling center of many ongoing educational programs and activities focusing on religious issues with an emphasis on Interfaith Dialogue. The A.D. Bruce Religion Center offers a place for both quiet meditation and spiritual growth.

Cougars in Recovery (CIR)- Provides a welcoming sober community and support for students in recovery from addiction and other struggles. Resources include sober community activities, recovery housing, recovery lounge, staff mentorship, and connection to additional resources.

  • To participate in the Cougars in Recovery community, interested students must complete an application, interview, and agreement form.

Justin Dart Jr. Student Accessibility Center- provides accommodations and support services to University of Houston students who have temporary or permanent health impairments, physical limitations, psychiatric disorders, and/or learning disabilities. Student Accessibility Center staff serve as liaisons between students and faculty, administrators, and community agencies. Advocacy services and environmental accessibility assistance are also provided.

Psychiatric Clinic - The Student Health Center includes a Psychiatry Clinic which provides psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and referrals. Services are for currently enrolled UH students and by appointment only. Conditions treated include ADHD/ADD, mood disorders like depression and bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, OCD, substance use disorders, PTSD, and adjustment disorders.

  • To schedule an appointment, call 713-743-5149. If you need to leave a message, include your name, student ID number, date of birth, and call back number.
  • The first appointment costs $40. Standard follow-up appointments are $20, extended follow-up appointments are $40. This does not include the cost of medication.
  • If you have a medication concern outside clinic hours or during holidays, please call the Memorial Hermann Nurse Health Line at 713-338-7979. This service is free and available 24/7.

Sexual Misconduct Support Services (SMSS)- a confidential campus-based resource to assist students, faculty, and staff who have been impacted by sexual misconduct (including stalking, sexual harassment, domestic violence, and sexual assault).

  • Support provided can include: emotional support, understanding Rights & Responsibilities under the UH Sexual Misconduct Policy, understanding the conduct process, reporting options (UH Police Department, Equal Opportunity Services/Title IX Coordinator), referrals to campus and community-based resources, creating a safety plan, and interim accommodations.
  • To make an appointment or receive support, contact the Women and Gender Resource Center at smss@uh.edu or stop by the office, located in the basement of Student Center South, Room B12 (around the corner from Starbucks).

Student Outreach and Support - this team in the Dean of Students Office works to identify, educate, support, and refer students who may be experiencing complex personal difficulties such as a mental health-related crisis that may impact them academically, personally and/or socially. They can meet with students to determine their needs and create a plan for support, advocate for students to professors and campus and community offices, assist in student’s transitions to and from medical leave, consult with students support network, and more.

UH Wellness - Offers a variety of resources and programs to support mental health, sexual health, sexual assault awareness, substance use recovery and prevention, and general wellness.

UH Wellness - Offers a variety of resources and programs to support mental health, sexual health, sexual assault awareness, substance use recovery and prevention, and general wellness.

Student Health Center & Campus Pharmacy- Provides affordable healthcare services to UH students, including primary care, labs, immunization, telehealth, orthopedic clinic, psychiatric clinic, and an on-campus pharmacy. Students who are enrolled in credit hours for the current semester are eligible to use the health center. Located in the Health 2 Building. Appoints are made in the Healthy Coog online portal.

  • Cost- For students who are covered by the university-endorsed Student Health Insurance Plan, most services will be free of cost. For students who are uninsured or have different coverage, prices for most basic services range from $10-$50. Basic costs can be viewed here.
  • Student Health Insurance Plan- Academic Health Plans manages a health insurance plan for UH students, endorsed by the university system. Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 hours (or 3 hours for graduate students) in order to be eligible to enroll. Dates for open enrollment can be found here.   Campus Recreation and Wellness Center - Provides recreation experiences for students. Currently enrolled students have automatic membership- bring your Cougar Card for entry. Facilities include pools, climbing wall, Fitness Zone gym with exercise equipment, and fields and courts for various sports. Services include swimming lessons, personal training, fitness classes, nutritional consultation, and certification training.

Campus Smiles- Through the School of Dentistry, Campus Smiles provides comprehensive dental care services, including check-ups, fillings, cosmetic services, and more. Campus Smiles accepts all major PPO insurances and offers a plan for UH students.

UH Family Health Center- Provides healthcare services including primary care, therapy, psychiatry, women’s care, pediatrics, and telehealth, through the College of Medicine. They are in network with several major insurance companies and have sliding scale options available to help lower costs.

UH Health- Eye Care Center- The UH Main Campus location offers eye care services that range from comprehensive eye examinations, glasses and contacts, medical and surgical management of eye disorders, to emergency eye care. The Eye Care Center accepts many major insurances. Appointments can be requested online.

Harris Health System- Offers community health centers, same-day clinics, three multi-specialty clinic locations, a dental center, mobile health units, and two full-service hospitals. Harris Health provides mental and behavioral healthcare as well as physical care. They accept most major insurances and also provide free or sliding scale services based on the patient’s situation.

Legacy Community Health - Community clinics provide affordable services including primary care for adults and children, counseling and psychiatry, dental care, vision care, endocrinology, LGBTQ care, OB/GYN, STI testing and treatment, and senior care. For uninsured patients, Legacy can help you find grants and other assistance to help with your healthcare costs. They also accept most major insurances. There are over 20 locations in the Houston area.

Montrose Center - The Montrose Center offers individual and family counseling. Services are open to all individuals regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, and therapists have extra sensitivity and expertise around LGBTQ+ issues. They accept most insurance, including Medicare/Medicaid, as well as sliding scale and grants for clients who are uninsured or have difficulty covering their copays. They also have programs for substance use recovery, intimate partner violence or sexual assault, and more.

Pathlight Mood and Anxiety Center and Eating Recovery Center- mental health treatment centers focused on higher level treatment for conditions including depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, BPD, bipolar disorders, eating disorders, and more. Treatment options include residential, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient (both in-person and virtual options). Inpatient treatment is also offered for eating disorders. In network with most major insurance providers, and additional financial help to cover treatment may be available.

Recovery Resources

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)- 12-step program for those in recovery from alcohol use.

Al-Anon- offers support to family members of people struggling with or in recovery from alcohol use.

Cocaine Anonymous- 12-step program for those in recovery from cocaine use.

Codependency Anonymous (CodA)- 12-step program for those in recovery from codependent or unhealthy relationships.

Council on Recovery- Works to help individuals and families whose lives have been impacted by alcoholism, drug addiction, and co-occurring mental health disorders. Services provided include individual and group counseling, family services, community support, and more.

Crystal Meth Anonymous- 12-step program for those in recovery from crystal meth use.

Marijuana Anonymous- 12-step program for those in recovery from marijuana use

The Montrose Center- offers recovery programs including recovery coaching and individual and group therapy. These programs are open to all but designed with LGBTQ+ and HIV+ individuals in mind.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA)- 12-step program for those in recovery from drug use

Refuge Recovery - a Buddhist-oriented recovery program (does not require any belief or previous knowledge of Buddhism). Focuses on meditation, writing and reflection, and building community to support recovery. You can find local and online meetings on their website.

SAMHSA ( Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) National Hotline (1-800-662-4357)- This is a confidential, free, 24-hour-a-day, 365-day-a-year, information service, in English and Spanish, for individuals and family members facing mental and/or substance use disorders. This service provides referrals to local treatment facilities, support groups, and community-based organizations. You can also visit the  online treatment locator, or text your zip code to  435748 to find help near you.

Smart Recovery- a recovery program that allows participants to design their own recovery path and provides skills to support recovery. Offers specialized groups for veterans and first responders, LGBTQ+ individuals, young adults, families and friends, and all recovering individuals. Local and online meetings can be found on their website.

Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Resources

Aid Victims of Domestic Violence- Provides support for individuals and families affected by domestic violence, including legal help and counseling.

The Bridge- Support for individuals and families who have experienced domestic or sexual violence, including crisis support, safety planning, advocacy, therapy, emergency shelter, housing, and children’s services. Located in Pasadena and Baytown.

DAYA - Support for South Asian survivors of domestic and sexual violence, including safety planning, crisis support, therapy, legal assistance, and housing assistance.

Forensic Center of Excellence- Offers free 24/7 examinations in cases of sexual assault, human trafficking, or abuse. Includes STI testing, safety planning, and collection of medical evidence and documentation that can be used in legal processes. Call 281-306-6893 before going to the nearest location. If you have any questions about if you should be seen by a forensic nurse, select Option 1 to speak to a forensic nurse.

Houston Area Women’s Center (HAWC)- Support for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and sex trafficking. Serves people of all genders. Services include crisis support hotline, safety planning for those escaping dangerous situations, emergency shelter, housing support, legal support, counseling, financial and career support, children’s services, and more.

Montrose Center Anti-Violence Program- Provides support for LGBTQ survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and trafficking; as well as all survivors of hate crimes regardless of sexual orientation. Services include crisis help, advocacy, counseling, compensation assistance, and emergency shelter.

Shelters for Domestic Violence (any gender identity):

Avenue 360- community clinics that provide primary care, behavioral health care, and dental care for adults and children, as well as hospice care, HIV care, and OB/GYN. Avenue 360 accepts many major insurances and offers sliding scale. They also offer a reduced-cost pharmacy.

Harris Health Gold Card - Healthcare coverage for uninsured low-income people in Harris County. Provides help with various types of routine care as well as will hospitalization or surgery.

Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast- PPGC aims to provide clients with the best healthcare services at an affordable price in a caring atmosphere. Services include Annual Wellness Visits, Birth Control, Breast Cancer Screening, HPV Testing & Vaccine, Morning-After-Pill (Emergency Contraception), Pregnancy Options, Pregnancy Testing, PrEP, STI Testing, Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy, and more.

Texas Drug Card- Discount Card to present to pharmacies for help with prescription drug costs.

The Assistance Fund- Help with treatment costs for certain conditions.
