Student Support & Wellbeing (SSW)

College comes with exciting opportunities, but it can also bring unexpected challenges. You don't have to navigate those challenges alone.

The Student Support & Wellbeing (SSW) Team supports residential students as they navigate personal, academic, and wellbeing concerns that may impact their college experience. Our team provides individualized support, helps students explore their options, connects them with campus resources, and works alongside them to identify next steps.

Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, facing an unexpected situation, having difficulty figuring out where to start, or simply need someone to help you navigate your options, our team is here to support you.

Our goal is not to solve problems for students, but to work with students, helping them build the skills, connections, and confidence to navigate challenges both now and in the future.

How We Can Help

You don't have to know exactly what you need before reaching out. Sometimes you need help finding the right resource. Sometimes you need help figuring out your next step. And sometimes you just need a space to talk through what's happening.

The Student Support & Wellbeing Team can help you:

  • Talk it through. We can provide a supportive space to process what's happening, organize your thoughts, and identify what you may need next.
  • Navigate UH. We'll help you understand university processes and, whenever possible, connect you with people who can help, not simply give you the name of another office.
  • Problem-solve. We'll work with you to identify what is within your control, explore possible solutions, and develop next steps.
  • Build skills and confidence. We can help you strengthen communication, self-advocacy, problem-solving, and other skills you can use beyond the situation you're currently facing.
  • Connect with resources. When another campus office or resource is better equipped to meet your needs, we'll help you understand where you're going and why.

Students may connect with us for concerns related to academics, basic needs and finances, conflict and relationships, grief and loss, physical health, life transitions, and other personal circumstances affecting their college experience.

Programs & Outreach

The Student Support & Wellbeing team offers programs throughout the year designed to support student wellbeing, build practical skills, and create opportunities for connection and learning. Our programs cover a wide range of topics, including healthy relationship, sexual health and consent, stress management, communication and conflict resolution, mental health and wellbeing, harm reduction, academic and financial wellbeing, and more.

Our programming may look different depending on the topic, from interactive activities and educational workshops to resource pop-ups and opportunities to simply take a break and de-stress.

What to Expect / FAQs

What to Expect

Students may be connected with Student Support & Wellbeing through a CARE report, referral from a Resident Advisor or other student staff member, Residence Life Coordinator (RLC), or another professional staff member. Students can also reach out to our team directly for support.
Once a referral is received, it is assigned to the RLC-SSW supporting the student's residential community. A team member will typically begin outreach within 24 hours to connect with the student and determine next steps.

Student support meetings are conversational and focused on what you need. Meetings may take place in person or virtually and can range from a brief 15-minute conversation to an hour depending on the situation.

You don't need to prepare anything or know exactly what you need before meeting with us. We'll talk about what's happening, explore what support may be helpful, and determine next steps together.

There isn't one standard path. Support is based on the individual student and their needs.

Some students may only need one conversation or a connection to a campus resource. Others may benefit from continued short- or mid-term support from our team. When a student needs longer-term or specialized support, we'll help connect them with the appropriate campus or community resources.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Student Support & Wellbeing works with students to help them navigate challenges, understand their options, connect with resources, and determine their next steps.

We are not a counseling or therapy service, do not provide academic accommodations, remove account holds, make decisions on behalf of faculty or other university offices, or guarantee financial assistance. When another office is better equipped to address a student's needs, we'll help them identify and connect with the appropriate resource.

In most situations, students can choose whether they would like to meet with our team. There may be circumstances where a meeting is required when a situation is significantly affecting roommates, suitemates, neighbors, or the broader residential community.

Our role is to support students, not to get them in trouble.

Meeting with an RLC-SSW does not mean that you are in trouble or that you have done something wrong. Because we are university officials, however, there may be circumstances in which we are required to report potential violations of university or housing policies.

Student Support & Wellbeing is not a confidential resource, and we respect students' privacy and only share information when necessary. As university officials, members of our team are mandated reporters/responsible employees, which means there are certain situations we are required to report.
