Uranium and Thorium Compounds

Certain compounds of uranium and thorium are not sold as radioactive materials, because the specific activity is very low. However, they must be treated as radioactive waste when disposed of. Thus, there are some labs that will not have a radioactive materials permit, but do generate radioactive waste. These compounds include, but are not limited to:

  • Uranyl acetate
  • Uranyl nitrate
  • Thorium acetate
  • Thorium nitrate
Labs using these compounds should separate any waste generated from processes using these materials from their other waste. Contact EHS for more information.
