All Faculty, Staff and Students
When traveling internationally, the most common business or academic activities include presenting research findings at an international conference, meeting with other universities to explore a future institutional collaborative agreement, performing fieldwork, or leading a learning abroad program, but any international travel where you will be representing UH as a researcher, faculty, or administrator is a business or academic activity.
Starting September 1, 2025 all UH-related business and academic travelers are required to upload a certificate of completion for the CITI Export Control Course as part of the International Travel Export Control review process.
Individuals preparing international shipments to an international party should complete the CITI Export Control Course and the Export Compliance International Shipping module. The completion certificates for these modules is needed for approval of the UH International Shipping form.
Faculty and/or staff supervisors of J-1 visiting scholars or H-1B workers need to be aware of deemed export risks when hosting visitors and temporary workers. The CITI Export Control Course is required for all individuals signing as faculty/staff sponsors on the UH Visa Candidate Affiliation and Deemed Export Assessment form.
Research administrators serve an important role in export control compliance. Identifying and flagging potential export control issues early in the project lifecycle benefits both the PI and the department. Research administrators should complete the CITI Export Control Course and the Export Compliance for Research Administrators module.
