BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS IN PLAYWRIGHTING & DRAMATURGY (BFA)
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Playwriting & Dramaturgy at the University of Houston provides an immersive and dynamic environment for students to develop original works for both stage and screen. Through individualized faculty mentorship, students write multiple plays, a TV pilot, and a series treatment while gaining hands-on experience in production, dramaturgy, and new play development.
Students have the opportunity to see their work fully produced as part of UH’s theatre season and participate in the annual 10-Minute Play Festival. They also serve as dramaturgs for seasonal productions and take specialized workshops in areas such as Comedy, Realism, and Myth & Ritual. In their junior year, students complete a full-length play with faculty guidance, followed by a second full-length play or a TV pilot and series guide as their senior capstone project.
This nationally distinctive program blends playwriting and dramaturgy, equipping students with skills in script development, research, revision, theatre history, dramatic structure, acting, and production. The curriculum also emphasizes writing for television and film, preparing students for careers across multiple storytelling mediums.
Located in Houston’s thriving theatre scene, the program fosters a supportive artistic community where students gain professional connections, earn prestigious internships, and receive recognition through regional and national playwriting awards.
