MUSIC THERAPY

Empathic. Transformative. Evidence-based.
Empowering future music therapists to integrate human connection and neuroscience-informed care through the art and science of music.

The Music Therapy Program at the Moores School of Music prepares students to integrate musical and clinical training to support health and well-being across the lifespan. Grounded in music, psychology, and neuroscience, the curriculum emphasizes evidence-based, culturally responsive practice and interprofessional collaboration.

Students gain early exposure to diverse areas of practice through seminars with local music therapy clinicians, followed by supervised observation in year two. In the third and fourth years, students move into progressively advanced practicum placements and may participate in collaborative research. Training culminates in a six-month, full-time internship under the supervision of a board-certified music therapist.
The program fulfills all requirements for eligibility to sit for national board certification (MT-BC). Students build practical skills across all core music therapy methods including improvisation, composition, re-creation, and receptive experiences, and apply them in a wide range of healthcare, educational, and community settings.

The program maintains strong clinical partnerships across Houston. These include institutions within the Texas Medical Center, including but not limited to Houston Methodist, Texas Children’s, and TIRR Memorial hospitals, as well as schools, outpatient clinics, and community-based settings. These collaborations provide students with rich opportunities for interprofessional learning and clinical training in one of the most dynamic medical hubs in the world.
