MUSIC THEORY & MUSICOLOGY
Innovative. Thought-provoking. Global.
A comprehensive academic program that fosters creative scholarship and practical musical
skills.

MUSIC THEORY
A comprehensive program in music theory contributes to the education of every Moores School music major. We emphasize aural skills, analysis of music across a full range of styles, and projects emphasizing creativity, critical thinking, and writing.
Under the guidance of our highly respected faculty, music theory majors receive instruction in music theory research and teaching pedagogy. Graduate students have the opportunity to hone their pedagogical skills through the many teaching assistantships available, and all degree programs culminate in the creation of a thesis document. As part of our commitment to presenting the most current research trends, we annually invite nationally known scholars to speak on campus through the Martha Suit Hallman Lecture Series. Our graduates have consistently garnered admission to high-level graduate programs, published research, and successfully pursued academic careers.
Qualified graduate music students in all degree programs are encouraged to apply for the Music Theory teaching assistantships awarded each academic year. Music Theory teaching assistants gain valuable professional experience teaching classes in the core undergraduate music theory program under the guidance of a faculty mentor. All graduate teaching assistants receive a stipend.

MUSICOLOGY
Musicology faculty at the Moores School are internationally recognized scholars whose research, publications, and teaching provide historical, cultural, and interpretive context for various repertories and practices. Area courses include curricular and elective offerings for all degree programs in music, from undergraduate through doctorate, plus non-major classes. To ensure an optimal educational experience for students and to reflect current research, faculty refresh course offerings regularly. We also advise graduate theses and final documents and participate in graduate student recital and research committees.
All Moores School faculty and students enjoy easy access to a wide range of research materials thanks to the UH Music Library, which is housed within the Moores School of Music building. Graduates of our MM program in musicology often pursue PhD programs at leading institutions and continue to successful academic careers.
The Musicology Area is committed to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and supportive environment for learning as well as a collegial atmosphere within the MSM. Occasional guest lectures and collaborations on festivals or scholarly events contribute to the vibrant cultural life of our campus and the Houston area.
