CONDUCTING

Practical. Integrated. Enriching.
An acclaimed conducting faculty, award-winning ensembles, and an immersive curriculum crafted to shape the success of the future’s leading conductors.

CONDUCTING

With emphases in Choral, Orchestral, Winds, and Jazz Conducting, the graduate conducting programs at the Moores School of Music are designed to prepare the next generation of conductors for success. Students work with internationally renowned faculty who bring a combined total of over 100 years of professional and educational conducting experience, and with MSM’s award-winning choral, wind, jazz, and orchestral ensembles.

The program emphasizes an organic approach to artistry that encourages conductors to develop a gestural language authentic to their personality and musical understanding. Training is individualized—tailored to meet the unique goals of each student, yet holistic—fostering confidence, expressiveness, and thoughtfulness in conducting; a readiness to lead in a variety of musical settings; and a strong foundation in ensemble musicianship and collaborative leadership.

Conducting students in all areas engage in comprehensive study that includes conducting philosophy, score analysis, and instrumental or vocal pedagogy. The unique blend of tradition, movement theory, and practical expertise provides a comprehensive and dynamic learning environment.

MSM students also enjoy the singular access to the rich, vibrant, and diverse arts offerings of the nation’s fourth largest city. These include the Houston Symphony and Houston Symphony Chorus, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Ballet, premier professional choral ensembles, and numerous community-based ensembles and organizations. Students regularly participate in masterclasses and collaborative experiences with these esteemed local organizations. Houston also abounds in opportunities to work with church and community choirs, and both choral and instrumental conductors are high in demand in metropolitan-area public schools.
