Full-Circle Moments: HLAGH-UH Finds Inspiration in Austin

In February 2026, the Hotel & Lodging Association of Greater Houston – UH Student Chapter (HLAGH-UH) traveled to Austin for an immersive look at the industry’s most diverse operations. More than just a site visit, the trip served as a powerful reminder of how student leadership and alumni connections pave the way for future careers.

The journey began with a focus on student initiative. The chapter vice president, Alina Gutierrez, leveraged her two summers of internship experience to secure a behind-the-scenes tour of the Kalahari Resort in Round Rock, Texas, a massive indoor waterpark and convention hotel. The exploration of specialized lodging continued at Miraval Austin Resort & Spa, an all-inclusive wellness retreat. The tour was coordinated by the chapter director of finance, Robert Bribiesca, who has already secured a leadership training position at the Hyatt-branded property following his graduation this May.

In the heart of downtown, the group visited the Fairmont Austin, currently positioned at the center of the city’s expansion next to the new Austin Convention Center. However, the highlight for many was a visit to the Austin Proper Hotel, where the power of the Hilton College legacy truly shined.

The tour was hosted by Paula Diaz (’18), the hotel’s director of housekeeping and a former HLAGH-UH vice president. Paula arranged an exclusive Q&A session with the luxury boutique hotel’s leadership team, offering students a rare look at independent luxury operations. For Paula, the visit was a profound "full-circle" moment.

“I vividly remember being in their shoes touring hotels and feeling motivated by industry professionals who took the time to share their passion,” Paula shared. “Seeing that same curiosity in this next generation was inspiring.”

Paula also extended a special thank you to Cathy Cheatham, instructional associate professor and hotel manager, noting that her mentorship was one of the primary reasons she chose to join the industry. Through these connections, our students aren't just touring hotels, they are walking into their future. These experiences continue to elevate the presence of the College and demonstrate the impact of our alumni network.
