The human ear is a magnificent machine to detect sounds and make sense of sounds throughout a lifetime. However, as we age hearing loss becomes the norm for most people. In addition, over exposure to excessive noise levels can speed up the hearing loss progression. The purpose of this summary is to give practical steps you can take to protect and preserve your hearing ability for as long as possible.
What is sound?
Sound can be thought of as anything perceived by the human ear. Sound is generated by oscillations in pressure waves moving through various mediums (air, water, and solids). We are being continuously exposed throughout our lives. Sound surrounds us and we enjoy many of them like music, birdsongs and conversations with friends. Sound and noise are often used interchangeably and noise is defined as simply unwanted sound.
How is sound measured?
Sound is measured in units called decibels (dB). The lower the measured dB value correspond to quieter noises and the higher the dB level the louder noises. Below is a chart showing representative sounds and corresponding sound level in the decibel scale.
