LEADING THE WAY

The Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies at the University of Houston College of Education prepares compassionate, transformative leaders committed to the success of all students. As part of a Tier One public research university in a diverse, dynamic city, we strive to inform policy and practice to improve outcomes across the educational pipeline.

ELPS offers graduate programs for aspiring principals, superintendents, special education professionals, higher education administrators, policymakers and researchers. We also offer undergraduate minors in special populations and Asian American studies.

ELPS DEGREES & PROGRAMS

The department’s graduate-level programs help educators and other professionals specialize and advance their careers. Our minors help undergraduate students gain critical knowledge and stand out among their peers.

SHORT TAKES

Detra Johnson, an assistant professor in the professional leadership – K-12 program, has been elected to serve as the 2021 chair-elect of the Research on Women and Education Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

Ruth M. López, an assistant professor in the professional leadership – K-12 program, earned a UH Teaching Excellence Award for 2020-21.

Mark McMahon, a doctoral student in the professional leadership – K-12 program, has been awarded the Governance Research Encouraging Achievement in Texas scholarship from the Texas Association of School Boards. McMahon’s research focuses on school board governance in high-poverty districts.

Cecilia Crear, who earned an Ed.D. in professional leadership in 2013, has been appointed new area superintendent at Alief ISD, where she began her career as a math teacher at Elsik High School. Crear previously served as executive director of secondary schools in Fort Bend ISD.
