LEADING THE WAY

The Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies at the University of Houston College of Education prepares compassionate, transformative leaders committed to the success of all students. As part of a Tier One public research university in a diverse, dynamic city, we strive to inform policy and practice to improve outcomes across the educational pipeline. ELPS offers graduate programs for aspiring principals, superintendents, special education professionals, higher education administrators, policymakers and researchers. We also offer undergraduate minors in special populations and Asian American studies.

The department’s graduate-level programs help educators and other professionals specialize and advance their careers. Our minors help undergraduate students gain critical knowledge and stand out among their peers.

A sampling of faculty, staff, student and alumni happenings:

Erica Spiegel, who earned an M.Ed. in special populations in 2022, has been named the 2023 Teacher of the Year at Keith Elementary in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD.

Michelle Waight, a student in the principal certification program, has been named Teacher of the Year at Aragon Middle School in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD.

Doctoral student and alumna Esmeralda Valdez received the 2022 National Association of College Auxiliary Services Volunteer of the Year award. She also was appointed to both the South and National Board of Directors for the organization. Valdez, who’s pursuing a Ph.D. in higher education leadership and policy studies, serves as executive director of University Services at UH.

Emily Messa, senior associate vice chancellor and associate vice president for administration at UH, was appointed vice president for the National Association of College Auxiliary Services Foundation board. She earned a Ph.D. in educational psychology and individual differences in 2015.
