  Perseverance and Community are Keys to Success, Professor Says

  Assistant Professor Ruth M. López shares her journey to and through college as a first-generation student. She recently earned a 2023 TRIO Achiever Award, recognized for her success since participating in the college access program in high school.

  Online M.Ed. Programs Listed Among Nation’s Best

  The College’s online master’s degree programs earned a 10^th place ranking on the 2023 U.S. News & World Report list. The top placement reflects the programs’ high-quality faculty, effective use of technology and high graduation rates, among other factors.

  Sisters Set to Earn Doctoral Degrees Together

  Ayana Lebron and Khechara Bradford juggled raising children, working and school, all amid COVID, Winter Storm Uri and family loss. They’ll graduate together, equipped with new tools to support students with special needs. “Our goal is to leave a legacy for our children,” Lebron said.

  Special Populations Professor Wins National Leadership Award

  Jacqueline “Jacquie” Hawkins earned recognition from the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate for her work to transform the College’s Ed.D. program. “It has been the joy of my life to lead this kind of transformation of doctoral students,” Hawkins said.

  Educator Certification Programs Earn New Accreditation

  The College’s programs earned full accreditation from the nationally recognized Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation. “Our faculty are providing best-in-class experiences, and our graduates are the ultimate beneficiaries,” Interim Dean Cathy Horn said.

  UH Partners with Aldine ISD to Prepare Future Principals

  The College of Education and Aldine ISD have launched an immersive principal training program in which participants gain real-world experience during a yearlong internship. Participant Joseline Herrera said the program will allow her to be “a role model for the leaders who will come behind me.”

  Alumni, Community Partner Honored at Star Awards

  The College of Education celebrated its 2022 award winners for their leadership and service to the community. The winners included a college consultant, a Houston ISD principal, a literacy advocate and an accountant who provides global leadership training.

  Higher Education Alumna Wins 2022 Rising Star Award

  Chantelle George, who earned an M.Ed. from the College in 2015, has impacted hundreds of thousands of students nationwide. During the pandemic, she launched a consulting firm to help school districts, colleges and nonprofits prepare traditionally underserved students for postsecondary success.

  Professor Earns National Science Foundation Role

  Elsa Gonzalez will have the opportunity to help improve student success in STEM fields as a newly selected program director for NSF. “It’s a very important opportunity because of the impact it can have in underrepresented communities,” she said.
