3.0 preferred
GRE waivers are available.*
For international students: This program meets the requirements for studying in the U.S. with an F-1 or J-1 visa.
Application Materials
Applicants must submit the following application and materials to be considered for admission into the Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction program.
Main Application
The following materials should be submitted through the ApplyWeb application:
Upload a PDF of your official transcript for initial review. If admitted, you must have your official transcripts sent directly to UH. View transcript instructions.
Write a statement of interest that addresses the following:
- Reason(s) for applying to the specific program
- Preparation for the intended field of study
- Research and study interests
- Future career plans or other aspects of your background and interests
Format:
- Maximum of 3 pages, double-spaced
- Times New Roman font (12 point)
- 1-inch margins
Common types of writing samples include:
- Honors or master’s thesis
- Published paper
- Co-written paper or comparable article (a literature review; a research paper that includes research questions, data and conclusions; or a paper written for presentation purposes).
A short, effectively written sample is preferable to a longer sample.
Reviewers will consider the following aspects when reading your submission:
- Writing ability
- Capacity for research
- Analysis and original thought at the graduate level
Requirements:
- Maximum 50 pages, double-spaced
- Must have pagination
- Papers written in a language other than English require an English translation.
- Applicants must be the first or solo author of the work.
- $50 for domestic applicants
- $80 for international applicants

Interview
An interview is required for admission into the program. The admissions committee will notify the applicant directly regarding the date, time and scope.
Admissions Decisions
- Applicants will receive email confirmation via ApplyWeb when all required documents have been received.
- Admission decisions will be posted on ApplyWeb. You must formally accept your admissions offer in ApplyWeb in order to enroll.
- International applicants should review I-20 and financial backing information for documentation needed.
*The GRE is not required for applicants with a master’s degree or an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. If taking the GRE, have your official scores sent to UH using school code 6870.
