Chemical Engineering Major

Engineering majors must earn a grade of C– or better in all engineering, mathematics, and science courses. No grade lower than C– will be accepted on any courses transferred to the University of Houston.

Transfer credit for chemical engineering courses may be accepted only from chemical engineering programs which are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

Once a student has attempted their first 6 hours in the major (CHEE 1331, 2331 or 2332), they are required to maintain a (cumulative) GPA of 2.25 or higher to continue in the major. The major GPA of 2.25 must be maintained at all times until the last semester before graduation.

If a student does not meet this major GPA criterion, he/she is placed on engineering major probation. If in a succeeding semester, while on probation, the student does not meet the 2.25 GPA criterion, he/she is placed on engineering major suspension. Students on major suspension are not allowed to take engineering courses during the semester on suspension. They may take non-engineering courses, or change their major out of engineering. Students may petition for readmission to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs. Readmission in not guaranteed. If readmitted, the student will be on probation during the semester of readmission. Only two major suspensions are allowed. Students must transfer out of engineering after two engineering major suspensions.

Engineering students can attempt any engineering course no more than two times. Attempt is defined as formal enrollment (registration) that results in a student receiving a letter grade, including grades of U, W and I. Students who violate the number of attempts allowed will be required to change their major.

Completion of all the chemistry courses at the University of Houston in this degree plan qualifies for a minor in chemistry. An official minor degree plan must be filed in the major department in the spring semester of the junior year. Prerequisites and/or corequisites must be met.
