Position: Attorney

Employer: Trey Yates Law

What does your job entail?

I am a practicing board certified family law trial attorney who assists all families during their time of legal transition whether that be by divorce, parenting dispute or death. My firm believes in client driven solutions to their unique legal conflict and work hard to provide the client all the information they need to make an informed decision. Complete family law mediation, collaborative family law and estate planning services are also offered by the firm.

How did your political science degree influence your career path?

I was privileged to take a Constitutional Law class in my undergraduate political science studies at the University of Houston conducted by Professor Robert Carp. His was a uniquely challenging class which prepared me well for law school and the rigors and challenges of higher education. His love for the law and the legal system was inspiring to many of us in his class and his advice as the prelaw advisor at the time was invaluable. My gratitude to Dr. Carp remains to this day.

Do you have any advice for students who aspire to hold a job like yours?

My advice to anyone who wants to enter the practice of law today would be to find a specific practice area that you are passionate about and then be prepared to work the long hours to distinguish yourself from others in the law field. Remember the practice of law is also a business, so take every business management course offered  that will complement the practice of law. The reward for the work you do, directly impacting the lives of others, will payback tenfold.
