Student Employment

The Department of Campus Recreation is one of the largest student employers on campus and we highly value student success. We provide leadership opportunities and transferable skills that a student can apply to any job upon graduation. Every day we practice customer service, critical thinking, teamwork, communications, problem-solving skills, and more.

Application

Every semester, Campus Recreation hires hundreds of part-time student employees in a variety of different positions. Most positions are open to students only, while others are open to both students and non-students. Applications for Lifeguards, Group Fitness Instructors, and Personal Trainers are accepted year-round. Below are the student employment opportunities available:

Rec Resource Fair

The Department of Campus Recreation depends on the University of Houston students to assist with many of the programs and services we offer. The opportunity to meet not only other students but faculty, staff, alumni, and campus visitors is very rewarding.

Aquatics

Lifeguard
Certification Required; however, we will train you!

Responsibilities include but are not limited to ensuring safe and effective day-to-day operations of the swimming pool and deck areas, enforcing departmental policy rules and regulations, and preventing accidents. Red Cross certification is preferred.
Water Safety Instructor
Certification Required

Responsibilities include but are not limited to teaching youth and adult swim lessons. Swim instructors must have a current WSI (Water Safety Instructor) and/or YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification.

Member Services Attendant

Responsibilities include but are not limited to answering phone calls, willingness to learn Campus Recreation policies and procedures, and filing. Excellent communication and customer service skills along with a personable and pleasant attitude are prerequisites.
Member Services Office Assistant

Outdoor Adventure

Climbing Wall Attendant

Help belay patrons and oversee the climbing wall.

Rental Assistant
Accepting Applications

Responsibilities include but are not limited to answering phone calls, renting out equipment to patrons, and general customer service. Excellent communication and customer service skills along with a personable and pleasant attitude are prerequisites.

Fitness

Fitness Zone Attendant
Accepting Applications

Responsibilities include but are not limited to monitoring access to the Fitness Zone areas. Inspecting equipment for safety, cleaning equipment, and providing a safe environment for active patrons. Assisting patrons with their workouts by providing spotting assistance and encouragement.

Fitness Instructor

(Yoga, Zumba, Water Aerobics, Cycling, Circuit, HIIT…) Responsibilities include but are not limited to leading patrons in group fitness sessions, preparing choreography, and a music playlist. Excellent communication skills and an enthusiastic personality are necessary. A group fitness certification from a nationally recognized certifying body is required for employment. Personal Trainer

Responsibilities include but are not limited to creating and implementing personalized fitness sessions focused on health, performance, and well-being. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are necessary. Be able to work independently, and enjoy motivating others to achieve their goals. Rec Sports 

Intramural Sports Official

Responsibilities include but are not limited to set-up and take-down and officiating of various intramural sporting events. Reviewing rules and regulations, maintaining accurate records of the different sporting events, and assisting the IM Supervisor as needed.

Office Assistant

Street Team/Student Ambassador and Promotions/Social Media Specialists

Responsibilities include but are not limited to distributing promotional material and posting fliers around the UH campus. 

Videographer
Accepting Applications

Responsibilities include but are not limited to capturing all of Campus Recreation’s best moments. They are at all UHRec events from intramurals, to on-campus events, staff appreciation events, group fitness classes, and much more. Most events are during the evening times, and a few weekends. Submit portfolio to recreation@uh.edu

Welcome Desk Assistant

Responsibilities include but are not limited to providing customer service regarding general inquiries and programming information, selling memberships, checking equipment in and out, inventory control, assisting with laundry, and verifying the authenticity of patrons authorized to use the facility.
