Students on Social Media

This guidance covers best practices and key policy reminders for students who manage official UH social media profiles and students’ personal accounts.

Managing UH social media profiles

Legal and policy basics

  • Respect copyright and intellectual property. Copyright protects original creative works (like writing, music, photos, video, software and art).
  • Do not violate anyone’s rights (publicity, privacy, copyright, trademark or other intellectual property).
    • That means you may not reproduce, modify or redistribute content you don’t own or have permission to use.
    • Never remove, alter or conceal watermarks or other copyright identifiers.
  • Utilize available graphics to reinforce the University’s brand. Do not abuse logos. Learn more about graphics standards for student organizations.
  • Follow student rules and standards. Adhere to the student handbook, including academic honesty and the student code of conduct, plus all applicable policies and laws.
  • Follow platform rules. Obey the terms of use for each platform and stay current as they change.

Personal social media profiles

Even on personal profiles, students are expected to follow the same core legal and conduct standards:
