Student Outlook: Available Transportation Options to Get Around Campus

By Sakeenah Raji, Marketing Assistant for Student Housing & Residential Life

In my sophomore year, I began using the shuttle buses on campus. Initially, navigating the UH Go app and its route complexities posed a challenge, but with time, I mastered its use. Now, in my senior year, relying on this service daily has become second nature. The popular and frequently used shuttle bus operates on a fixed schedule from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, serving key stops such as Fleming, Philip G. Hoffman Hall (PGH), the Law Center and the Student Center. Accessing the schedule is seamless through the UH Go app, with the shuttle icon prominently displayed. Additionally, the service extends to the Sugar Land campus shuttle, facilitating inter-campus transportation with extended hours.

For nighttime transport, the UH Cougar Ride fills the gap, operating from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Booking via the UH Go app operates on a first-come, first-serve basis, so be sure to call ahead. Moreover, the University of Houston Police Department (UHPD) offers a ride-share service for enhanced safety during late hours.  Accessible via the UHPD phone line at 713-743-3333, it's essential to consider potential wait times ranging from 15 minutes to an hour.

These services cater to all students, including residents and commuters, underscoring the university's commitment to safety. Leveraging the UH Go app streamlines access to these resources, emphasizing their ease of use. However, it's crucial to remember that these services are meant for on-campus transportation exclusively.

In conclusion, these campus ride services stand as a testament to the university's dedication to student safety and convenience. I encourage everyone to utilize these resources whenever needed, ensuring a smooth and secure journey within our great campus. Happy riding, Coogs!

Mentees Wanted for SHRL Mentor Collective Program

The Student Housing and Residence Life (SHRL) peer mentoring program, Mentor Collective is preparing for its upcoming launch! To help you during your time at the University of Houston (UH), we invite you to participate in the SHRL peer mentor program as a mentee, where you will complete a brief survey to be matched with a mentor.

Having a mentor holds more significance than ever before.

As a mentee you will have the opportunity  to engage in discussions about your academic and personal experiences at school and beyond with your mentor. Additionally, you will  gain access to resources designed  to help you build resilience as you progress along your journey from student to UH alumni.

UH Senior, Christina Opara, is participating in the program as a mentor and is excited to share her experience with potential mentees.

Reflecting on her journey, Opara shares, “Growing up with immigrant parents, both me and my siblings were accustomed to high expectations regarding education. However, as I matured, I found myself grappling with uncertainties about career paths. Despite encountering health challenges, I made the decision to transfer to UH from a community college in Dallas after earning my associate degree in 2022, transitioning from kinesiology (physical therapy) to public health.”

A benefit of the Peer Mentoring Program is the opportunity to learn and grow alongside fellow residents who have traversed similar paths and overcome their own set of challenges on the road to success.

Acknowledging her own journey, Opara admits, “I don’t have a perfect map on life, but I hope my experiences and the obstacles I’ve overcome can inspire you to keep doing your best!"

For more information about the mentee experience, click here. Interested students can sign up for the mentee program through the following link: https://uh.mentorcollective.org/register/uh-studentsuccess/mentee.
