Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS)

BASICS is a nationally recognized and evidence-based program to reduce harmful alcohol use. The program utilizes motivational interviewing techniques to enhance motivation to change. BASICS is open to all students, but is primarily used as an educational sanction in the conduct process.

By engaging in BASICS, participants will be able to:

If you are sanctioned or interested in this program, the following steps will occur:

  1. Contact Brittani Clarkson, Assistant Director of Wellness Programs, to notify that you need to take BASICS.
  2. You will be assigned a faculty or staff facilitator who will work with you to schedule a time to meet.
  3. All meetings will start with an online survey that should take up to 30 minutes to complete.
  4. Once completed, the participant will meet with the facilitator to go over their individualized results.
  5. A follow-up meeting will occur one month after the initial meeting. This will be scheduled with your facilitator.
