Origin & Diagenesis of Marine and Non-Marine Carbonates
Deposition and diagenesis of marine carbonates will always be a part of my research interests. For example, we have conducted fairly extensive analyses of a large suite of modern through pre-Pleistocene carbonates from the Arabian Gulf in addition to a number of studies of marine strata from the U.S. However, I have been mainly involved with the study of non-marine carbonates, travertines, caliches, speleothem deposits, etc., for a number of years. These investigations have provided insights into paleoclimates, carbonate geochemistry, diagenesis, etc. In addition to obtaining a better understanding of these accumulations, these data have provided valuable insights into processes that commonly occur much more slowly in marine strata (e.g., precipitation of cements), and therefore, are considerably more difficult to study in the marine deposits.
Travertines
All aspects of travertine accumulations are of research interest, such as formation of deposits, overall patterns of accumulation, petrography and geochemistry, and diagenesis. Of specific interest are differences between abiotic and biotically induced precipitates, for example, do they display differences in their aggregate morphology, crystal habit, trace element, and/or stable isotope signatures. Additionally, can we use travertines or speleothem deposits as valid proxies for paleoclimatic conditions?
Caliches (pedogenic carbonates)
Origin of caliches, what can their gross accumulations, mineralogy, geochemical signatures tell us about climate.
Current Research Projects
In the last few years most of my research has been focused on:
- Bacterially induced precipitates of minerals: This research has demonstrated the variety and facility with which bacteria can induce the precipitation of calcite and aragonite. Present studies are geared toward bacterially induced precipitation of other minerals, e.g., dolomite, siliceous hot spring deposits, Mn- and Fe-rich oxides. For example, we have been able to differentiate abiotic from biotically induced Mn-oxide precipitates that formed in hot springs in Yellowstone National Park. Presently we are attempting to find a geochemical signature to distinguish between these biotically and abiotically precipitated Mn-oxides. Another study is attempting to precipitate dolomite under laboratory conditions. A general aspect of these studies is to establish criteria by which we can recognize bacterially induced precipitates in the rock record. This is of special interest in connection with the search for extraterrestrial life, e.g., how can we best recognize evidence for previous life on Mars and other extraterrestrial bodies.
- Origin and diagenesis of large (up to 40m high) lacustrine Pleistocene tufa mounds, in Searles Lake, California.
- Deposition and diagenesis of Jurassic and older carbonate and evaporate strata from the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming.
