EH50: Halogenated Organic Solvents Safety Awareness
Course Description: This online training provides an overview of safety and regulatory compliance requirements
related to halogenated organic solvents regulated by the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA), such as methylene chloride (CAS# 75-09-2), also known as dichloromethane or DCM, and carbon tetrachloride (CAS#
56-23-5), also known as CTC.
The training covers chemical hazards, exposure control methods, proper storage and
handling practices, waste disposal requirements, personal protective equipment (PPE),
emergency response procedures, and requirements related to exposure monitoring and
chemical purchasing. The training also provides general safety guidance for routine
chemical handling in laboratory environments.
Who should take it: This training is mandatory for all UH personnel who work with or plan to work with
methylene chloride or other EPA-regulated halogenated organic solvents as a laboratory
chemical. It is also highly recommended for laboratory personnel who routinely handle
organic solvents as part of research, teaching, or other laboratory activities.
