Greek Week Brings UH Fraternity & Sorority Community Together

By Cassandra Joseph

The Center for Fraternity & Sorority Life (CFSL) hosted its annual Greek Week from March 30 to April 2. The theme for this year’s week was “Greek Week: The Ultimate Binge,” which was based on various popular Netflix movies and shows, such as “Bridgerton (2020) and Stranger Things (2016)”. The members of the fraternity/sorority community were placed into 8 teams and participated in various events throughout the week to showcase service, competition, and teamwork.

On Monday, the week began with the Kick-Off Celebration & Service event. The Center partnered with the Metropolitan Volunteer Program on this event that allowed chapter members and other attendees to make cat toys for the local SPCA, cards of encouragement for local schools gearing up to take the STAAR test and painted/decorated magnets to give out at various senior centers!

On Tuesday, the Center hosted Tacos, Trivia, and Treats. The 8 teams came together for some friendly competition, with plenty of excitement, cheers, and laughter over categories including Netflix shows/movies, Rap Culture, and UH trivia. The members had a great time working together while sharing some tacos and treats. Team The Umbrella Academy (Delta Sigma Theta, Gamma Beta, Lambda Theta Alpha, & Phi Sigma Kappa) took home first place for trivia, and 2nd place went to Team Big Mouth (Delta Zeta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Sigma Lambda Gamma, & Sigma Nu).

On Wednesday, chapter members attended the Greek Week Speaker event. The speaker was Dr. Lori Hart, and her talk was titled “An Hour of Power.” This conversation focused on ways UH Greeks can continue learning to create impact and change within the community. This dynamic and motivational speech was received by over 550 members who were in attendance.

The week concluded on Thursday with the Greek Week Celebration. At the Celebration, chapter members enjoyed snacks and refreshments, played various games, and connected with members of the UH Greek community to celebrate the excitement of the week.

Throughout the entire week, there was also a banner competition, where students were able to vote for their favorite banner, designed and decorated by each of the 8 Greek Week teams. The 1st place team for the banner competition was Team Suits (Chi Omega, Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Delta Chi, & Alpha Sigma Phi), 2nd place in the competition went to Team Outer Banks (Delta Gamma, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sigma Phi Omega, &Tau Kappa Epsilon) and 3rd place went to Team Big Mouth (Delta Zeta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Sigma Lambda Gamma, & Sigma Nu).

Overall, Greek Week was a huge success, with attendance up from last year. The National Pan-Hellenic Council President, Kylen Morten, would have to agree, stating, “Greek Week was honestly one of the best experiences I have had. It really reminded me of why I joined in the first place. I loved connecting with other organizations, building new relationships, and having fun all week long. Every event was packed, the energy was high, and you could feel the unity across the whole community. I have much appreciation for the CFSL staff because I know how much hard work went into making this week happen, and it did not go unnoticed. I truly enjoyed every moment of it.”

The winning teams included 1st place being taken by Team Suits (Chi Omega, Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Delta Chi, & Alpha Sigma Phi), 2nd place going to Team Breaking Bad (Zeta Tau Alpha, Omega Psi Phi, Lambda Delta Psi, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon), and 3rd place being taken by Team Big Mouth (Delta Zeta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Sigma Lambda Gamma, & Sigma Nu).

As the Center for Fraternity & Sorority Life wraps up the semester, the chapters' commitment, and dedication to remain engaged and uphold the pillars of the community are evident and appreciated. The Director for the Center of Fraternity & Sorority Life, Cassandra Joseph, said, “This is the 5th year CFSL has hosted Greek Week, and every year just gets bigger and better. It is truly a joy to see the members of various organizations come together, give back to the greater Houston community, connect over healthy competition, and build community within fraternity/sorority life.” The dedication and spirit shown by our fraternities and sororities remind us that this community is built on more than tradition. It’s built on connection, purpose, and pride, and we look forward to seeing this momentum carry into all that lies ahead.
