Laboratory for the Neural Bases of Bilingualism
The lab investigates the neural bases of bilingualism using a variety of methods
including functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy. The
work has focused on three principal aspects of bilingualism: the age at which a language
is learned, the role of proficiency, and the cognitive control mechanisms involved
in maintaining two languages. This work has been funded by grants from the National
Institute on Aging, National Institute of Deafness and Communicative Disorders, National
Science Foundation, the UC Linguistic Minority Research Institute, UC Mexus and University
of Houston Grant to Enhance and Advance Research.
