About our Department

WHO WE ARE

History is the study of the human past and a laboratory to understand the present using historical facts. It provides a framework and context for understanding how people, institutions, and ideas evolve over space and time. The UH Department of History represents the breadth and vitality of the historical discipline with our wide range of backgrounds, expertise, and scholarly practice.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to advance knowledge and foster critical inquiry into the complexity and variety of human experiences and explanations through innovative scholarship, excellent teaching, and public engagement, using rigorous scholarly methods and evidence-based arguments. We equip students with transferable skills that include critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, persuasive written and oral communication, and information literacy and research. Our students to thrive in graduate and professional school and the workforce, and they contribute to their communities at local, national, and international levels.
