The Department of Economics at the University of Houston is made up of an innovative group of scholars who are dedicated to producing top-flight research while training our students in the latest techniques in economic analysis. At the undergraduate level, we offer a standard sequence of introductory courses as well as a wide range of upper-level classes to prepare students for positions in the private sector, government, or graduate school. Our Master in Applied Economics program provides advanced training in economic modeling, applied econometrics, energy economics and health economics. Our Ph.D. program provides our students with a firm understanding of economic theory and empirical methods that they bring to their dissertations while working closely with our faculty.
Our department’s research and teaching are in two broad areas: Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. In Microeconomics, we have a core of researchers in labor economics, development economics, public economics, education, health, political economy, urban economics and applied microeconometrics. In Macroeconomics, we have a core of researchers in international economics, monetary policy, financial economics, economic growth and applied macroeconometrics. Our faculty’s research is impactful and publishes in the top peer-reviewed economics journals. Our department has been recognized at several levels for excellence, including members in the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), a fellow of the Society of Labor Economists, editor roles in major journals, and winners of university-wide and college-wide awards for research and teaching excellence.
The department hosts two seminar series, Macroeconomics (usually on Mondays during the Fall and Spring) and Applied Microeconomics (usually on Tuesdays), which bring in top scholars to share their work with our faculty and students. In addition, we co-organize and co-host a number of conferences, including Texas Camp Econometrics, Stata Texas Empirical Microeconomics Conference, and the DAL-HOU-MEX Conference on International Economics. We endeavor to build research communities and foster environments for idea exchange and collaboration.
