Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies

The African American Studies major requires a minimum of 30 semester hours of coursework in the major. Each student must complete 18 hours of required courses and 12 hours of Africana Studies Electives. Students must complete at least 18 of the 30 required hours for a major in African American Studies in residence at the University of Houston, and 12 of those hours must be advanced courses at the 3000 or 4000 level. Students must earn a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 in all courses applied to the major.

Major Requirement ONE
(Students must take all of the following courses - 12 hours)

  • AAS 2320 - Introduction to African American Studies
  • AAS 3330 - African American Studies Oral History and Field Research
  • AAS 3366 - African American Studies Community Internship
  • AAS 4370 - Seminar in African American Studies

Major Requirement TWO
(Select one of the following courses - 3 hours)

  • AAS 3307 - African Spiritual Transformation in the Social Sciences
  • AAS 3350 - Slavery and Race Relations in the African Diaspora 
  • AAS 3354 - African Nationalist Thought and Ethics in the U.S. 

Major Requirement THREE
(Select one of the following courses - 3 hours)

  • AAS 4330 - The Black Church in America 
  • AAS 4373 - Black Leaders of the Twentieth Century 
  • AAS 4377 - Seminar on W.E.B. DuBois 

Major Requirement FOUR
(Select four courses - three must be at the 3000 or 4000 level - 12 hours)

Minor Degree in African American Studies

A minor in African American Studies requires 18 hours of coursework:

  • REQUIRED: AAS 2320: Intro to African American Studies and AAS 4370: Seminar in African American Studies (6 hours)
  • Six hours in AAS and the humanities, fine arts, or communication courses
  • Six hours in AAS social science courses
The following additional requirements must also be met:
  • 12 of the 18 hours must be in residence
  • 12 of the 18 hours must be in AAS courses
  • 12 of the 18 hours must be advanced and at least 6 of the advanced hours must be in residences
  • A minimum GPA of 2.00 for each minor course
