German Major

Bachelor of Arts in German
German majors must earn at least a 2.50 grade point average in all courses counting toward the major requirements and attempted at the University of Houston. Students who have not taken their first three semesters of German at the University of Houston (including those with two or more years of high school German) must take a placement examination and see a department advisor before enrolling in German courses Credit may be awarded by examination in language courses on the 2000- and 3000-level. For information see the program director. Transfer students must take at least 12 semester hours of advanced German course work in residence to qualify for a bachelor's degree with a German major or German teacher education major.
Track 1: Concentration in German Language and Literature (27 hours)
In addition to the requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree, students majoring in German with a concentration in German Language and Literature must complete:
- GERM 3330, 3331, 3332, 3333, 3334, and 4373, or 4374.
- Three semester hours selected from GERM 3362, 3363, 3364, 3380, 3381, 3382, 3384, 3385, 3386, 3387 (taught in English).
- Six additional hours of advanced (4000-level) German courses (taught in German).
- The sophomore level of a second foreign language, or six hours in another field approved by the department.
Track 2: Concentration in German Area Studies (30 hours)
In addition to the requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree, students majoring in German with a concentration in German Area Studies must complete:
- GERM 3330, 3333, 3334, and 4373, or 4374.
- Six semester hours selected from GERM 3362, 3363, 3364, 3380, 3381, 3382, 3384, 3385, 3386, 3387 (taught in English).
- Three additional hours of advanced (4000-level) German courses (taught in German).
- HIST 3357 or 3358.
- Six semester hours of art, music, or philosophy, history, economics, political science, or World Cultures and Literatures. Course content must deal with issues related directly to the field of German Area Studies. Approval by program director required.
