Composition Courses
The English Department offers composition courses that fulfill the university's Core communication requirements. This page provides information on prerequisites for placement in different composition courses, as well as how to earn Advanced Placement credit.

Prerequisites
By earning at least one of the following scores, the student satisfies the prerequisites for enrollment in ENGL1303: Freshman Composition. If the student does not meet the prerequisites for enrollment in ENGL1303 the student should enroll in ENGL1300.
- TASP/THEA 240 (Writing Section)
- TSWE 40
- TAAS 89 (Reading Section) & 1770 (Writing Section)
- SAT 1070 (Overall) & 500 (Verbal Section)
- ACT 19 (Verbal)
ENGL 1300: Basic Writing
Work in the development of basic expository writing skills.
ENGL 1303: Freshman Composition I
A detailed study of the principles of rhetoric as applied in reading and writing expository essays.
Advanced Placement Credit
By earning at least one of the following scores, the student earns 3 hours credit for ENGL1303.
- Advanced Placement: English (Language/Composition) 3
- SAT II Writing Test 620 (Effective only for students who have taken the exam prior to January 2005)
ENGL 1304: Freshman Composition II
A detailed study of the principles of rhetoric as applied to analyzing and writing argumentative and persuasive essays; principles and methods of research, culminating in writing a substantial research paper.
Advanced Placement Credit
By earning at least one of the following scores, the student earns 3 hours credit for ENGL 1304.
- Advanced Placement: English (Language/Composition) 4
- SAT II Writing Test 660 (Effective only for students who have taken the exam prior to January 2005)
ENGL 1370: Freshman Composition II — Honors
Principles of rhetoric as applied to writing persuasive essays; principles and methods of research.
Sophomore Level Courses

The prerequisite for enrollment in sophomore level English courses is completion of ENGL1303 and 1304 or their equivalents.
