2024 TYCTWD

• Registration Information

  TYCTWD will take place on Friday, June 7, 2024 between 9:00 am to 4:00 pm* at various locations across campus. Each TYCTWD host location will have its own activity time.

  All children must be accompanied by a UH employed parent for the entire day. Participating children must be between the ages of 6 and 17*. 

  Registration will open on Friday, May 3rd. The registration link will be active until Tuesday, May 28th, 5:00 p.m., or until all TYCTWD hosts activities are filled to capacity. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

• Forms to Participate

  In order to participate in the activities of Take Your Child to Work Day you must complete the following forms for your children during the registration process. Registration will not be considered complete unless the required forms are attached.
  
  

  • Release and Indemnification Agreement (OGC-S-2023-11) - as required by the Office of Risk Management for event participation 
    
    
  • Authorization for Use of Image (OGC-SF-2003-02) - for everyone to take pictures at the event
    
    

• Special Announcements

  
  

  • All children must be accompanied by a UH employed parent for the entire day.
  • Participating staff are responsible for speaking with their respective supervisor or manager about their ability to bring their children to the office and attend the event.
    
  • Participants are responsible for their own parking.
  • Participants are responsible for their own lunch.

• Volunteer Opportunities

  Staff Council needs volunteers to help during Take Your Child To Work Day (TYCTWD).
  UH students, staff, and faculty are welcome to volunteer.

  Sign-up to volunteer using the MS Form.

  • Stuff backpacks (before the event)
  • TYCWD check-in/set up the day of the event.
  • Help TYCTWD hosts the day of the event (various shift times are available).

• 2024 TYCTWD Host Activities

  All children must be accompanied by a UH employed parent for the entire day.

   

  1. Environmental Health and Safety (Campus Safety)

  • Age Range: 10 and up
  • Check in time: 9:45 am
  • Activity time:10:00 am - 12:00 pm
  • Check in location: Agrawal Building
  • Activity description: Mock College Laboratory Activities. Participants will experience an interactive laboratory session. They will be introduced to laboratory safety practices and explore the usage of safety equipment found in a laboratory environment. Registration and indemnification forms will be given to participants by the event planning committee. EHS will not be responsible for the registration of participants.

  • Activity time: 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
  • Check in location: Agrawal Building

  3. Fire and Life Safety

  • Age Range: 8-12 years old
  • Check in time: 9:30 am
  • Activity time:  10:00 am -12:00 pm
  • Check in location: TLCC Annex Building 105
  • Activity description: General fire safety presentation, fire extinguisher practice, and review of fire alarms and sprinkler systems.

   

  4. UH Student Center (South)

  • Age Range: 8 - 15 years old
  • Check in time: 10:00 am
  • Activity time: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
  • Check in location: Student Center South Games Room (Lower Level)
  • Activity description:Participants will learn about bowling etiquette and have the opportunity to practice their bowling skills. Student Centers will also provide socks and some small gifts as part of their morning. Student Centers will not charge for the lane usage and shoe rentals. If families decide to play arcade games, they would pay for that on their own. This is not recommended for children who have sensitivity to loud sounds and/or flashing lights.

   

  5. UH Police Department

  • Age Range: 6 - 13 years old
  • Check in time: 10:00 am
  • Activity time: 10:15 am - 12:00 pm
  • Check in location: Farrish Hall Room #351
  • Activity description: Participants will be coloring a UHPD Badge, stickers, and staying safe presentation. Police Vehicles/equipment will be shown and demonstrated. 

   

  6. UH STEM Center in collaboration with Dr. Naihao Chiang - Department of Chemistry

  • Age Range: 8-14 years old (3rd - 8th grade)
  • Check in time: 9:30 am - 9:45 am
  • Activity time: 10:00 am - 11:30 am
  • Check in location: Science Building Room 132
  • Activity description: Unleash the Magic of Chocolate: Discover the science behind melting chocolate and how it transforms from a solid to a luscious liquid.

    · Master the Art of Tempering: Learn the secret to achieving that perfect glossy finish on your chocolate creations.

    · Create Edible Masterpieces: Bend, mold, and shape your tempered chocolate into beautiful works of art.

    · Explore Flavor and Texture: Understand how different temperatures affect the taste and texture of chocolate.

    · Become Chocolate Scientists: Dive into the fascinating world of cocoa solids, cocoa butter, and sugar crystals.

    · Take Home Sweet Memories: Leave with your own handcrafted chocolate masterpiece and newfound chocolatier skills.

    So, put on your chef’s hat, grab your spatula, and let’s melt, mold, and make some mouthwatering magic!

   

  7. Athletics - ACE

  • Age Range: 4-18 years old 
  • Check in time: 10:00 am - 10:15 am
  • Activity time: 10:30 am -11:30 am
  • Check in location: UH Alumni Center Main Lobby
  • Activity description: A variety of athletic related games and activities that will explore some of the sports that we have here at UH, led by some of our amazing athletic staff.

  1. College of Technology
  

  • Age Range: 6-13 years old
  • Check in time: 8:30am
  • Activity time: 9:00am
  • Activity description: Spaghetti tower, marshmallow challenge, stack the cup race, penny boat, and egg drop challenge activities.

  3. Public Art of the University of Houston System
  

  • Age Range: 5-13 years old
  • Check in time: 10:00am
  • Activity time: 10:00am to 11:00 am
  • Activity description: Participants will explore art in public spaces at the University of Houston campus and create their own artwork to take home! Create and customize a colorful chromo-spinner inspired by Double Physichromie, a public sculpture by Carlos Cruz-Diez.

   

  4. UH STEM Center
  

  • Age Range: 8-13 years old
  • Check in time: 9:00 am
  • Activity time: 9:30 am- 11:30am
  • Activity description: Ready, set, go! Participants will create a balloon car with your students and go through the engineering design process to accomplish different challenges.

   

  5. UH Police Department
  

  • Age Range: 5-13 years old
  • Check in time: 11:15 am
  • Activity time: 11:30 am to 12:30 pm
  • Activity description: Participants will be coloring a UHPD Badge and sharing why they chose the colors and design. Participants will be going outside to look at a UHPD car and ATV.

   

  6. Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine
  

  • Age Range: 5-13 years old
  • Check in time: 11:00 am
  • Activity time: 11:00 am to 1:00 pm
  • Activity description: Participants will learn how to take care of minor cuts and scrapes, play games, and earn some very cool prizes. Pizza and cake will be provided by the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine.
