My golf cart stopped working in the middle of the road while it rained. He not only took my vendor to their vehicle using his golf cart but came back for me. He dropped me off at the general service building so I could stay dry while I waited to get help. In the meantime, he went in the rain to move the broken-down golf cart out of the road and then tested it see if it would work again. All of this happened on a Saturday, when he had guests attending the football game after the tailgate. Thank you, Andy for taking care of fellow Coogs.”

  • Cristian “Cris” J. Reyes

Program Manager I, Office of the University Registrar

“I first was introduced to Cris through someone in Computer Science. We were having issues in BIOL/BCHS keeping up with managing students that were enrolling for the next course in a sequence, but didn't pass the pre-requisite and were already registered for the next course. He was the key person to help solve this issue. He worked with me to get it done for BIOL/BCHS all through the COVID-19 remote working and it has really made a difference.

In addition to this, he is a great resource when it comes to registration issues or general catalog management and questions. He is such a team player, I wish we could duplicate him all over campus because his internal customer service is STUPENDOUS! I have contact him with emergency issues (or they were for me) and he helped me right away and then even checked back later. He is truly a great example of a model UH employee. • Alicia Whitmire

Financial Coordinator II, Student Affairs Business Services “I wanted to submit a Cougar Cudos to Alicia for really showing what it means to go above and beyond in providing stellar customer service. I was bringing our VPR over to a classroom in Cougar Village where he would be giving a presentation, and we got lost finding the classroom based on our directions (this was our first time over in the CV1 and CV2 buildings). We walked into Cougar Village 2 and encountered Alicia in her office, who stepped out offering to assist us. Not only did she help identify the classroom that we needed to go to (it was in the next building over), but she also took the time to personally walk us over next door and locate the classroom. I have to say I was so pleasantly surprised that she was so kind and went out of her way (and her role) to help us, and I had such a positive interaction and experience with her. She truly showcases what it means to be a stellar employee and Coog, and Student Housing and Residential Life is very lucky to have such a great staff member! Thank you!”

John also has an ability to communicate effectively with all his co-workers, from the director level to our students. Recently, we have been going through a transition for our computers. I faced with several issues during this migration and Ray went beyond to ensure my workflow was not interrupted. I greatly appreciate his support. It is with great pleasure that I respectfully submit this nomination for Cougar Kudos.

“When I first started with the UH CON a couple of years ago, Roberto was my guide in making me feel at home.  At that time, he was the lead for the IT department.  He has now transitioned into the role of being in the simulation center.  In both roles, he always strives to do his best and does an amazing job!”

  • Eve Esch

Executive Director, Student Centers, Student Center

“During the fall 2021 Cougar First Impressions (CFI) event, Eve worked a shift in the CFI virtual channel in Microsoft Teams. During her shift, Eve was very proactive in welcoming students and letting them know we were there to answer their questions. She was able to answer a variety of questions or let students know where they could get the answer. The virtual channel was a small but important part of this year's hybrid in-person and virtual CFI, and Eve helped several students feel welcomed and heard.”

  • Steven Burns

"Steven worked for the most part of the two-day event delivering supplies to the tables and also helped out on Table 7 during very busy hours. This was very notable as Table 7 was uniquely located in an area with a lot of student traffic//questions that during peak hours the, table personnel were overwhelmed.  His presence coupled with knowledge of the campus made a lot of difference.”
  • Sharon Pellas

Program Manager II, Env Health & Life Safety

“Sharon was the person behind Table 7, starting the day, coordinating personnel to fill in the shifts, and ensuring that give-away items were properly spaced  out during the two-day event. She also ensured the table was properly shut down during the day and at the end of the event. Her exceptional effort provided for a smooth event.”

  • Kevin Nguyen

    Academic Advisor II, Dean, Technology

“Kevin maintained a positive and high level of energy throughout the event which surely wasn't easy with the mask on and the sun beating down on us. He knew the locations of each and every building on campus which helped us a lot, especially during sudden influx of students. Kudos to Kevin!”

  • Shahab Tayyab

    Assistant Business Administrator, Chemistry

“Although Shahab has assumed a new position since the time he was so helpful, he continues to be a reliable support person whenever needed.  He conducted weekly training sessions and even when attendance dwindled to only a couple of attendees, he faithfully continued to offer the sessions.  In so doing, I was able to attain a level of competency that I would otherwise probably not have achieved or if I did, it would have taken a much longer period of time to do so.  I'm not sure, but when I initially thought about nominating him for Cougar Cudos, the program may have been on a brief hiatus.  Although time has passed, I want him to know how much I really appreciate everything he taught me, for always being so supportive and for knowing the answers to over 99% of the questions I asked him.  And, the 1% he couldn't answer immediately, he would answer in less than a day time.  He truly does deserve to be recognized for his diligence and hard work!  Thanks Shahab!!!!”

  • Mauricio Perez

    Office Coordinator, Chemistry

"Mauricio is the Office Coordinator for the Chemistry Department in the college of NSM and has served in this position for nearly 3 years. Prior to becoming the Office Coordinator he held a work study position for many years in the department also. Mauricio is always willing to help and is the definition of a true team player. He is constantly looking to excel by understanding different working aspects within the department. Most recently Mauricio impressed with his attention to detail on a 274 line journal entry that had 646 pages of back up documentation. In my 9 years with the department I believe that this journal may hold the record for the largest in both number of lines and pages of documentation. Mauricio is currently working to complete his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology Sports Administration with a minor in Marketing. He is a valuable asset to our team here in Chemistry and deserves recognition for how he consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic."

On Friday the 20th of August my niece and her family came to campus to move in, on the date and time that was given to them. They had traveled from Louisiana a 5-hour drive. Upon arrival to Moody Tower, they were told to go to the Wellness Center to receive their ID and Key. This was at 11:00 am. They immediately went to the Wellness Center and were told to come back at 1:00 pm. When they returned, they were still not able to receive the ID or key to move in and were instructed to continue to wait. They continued to wait and around 3:30 they were told their key or ID was not available. I immediately began to reach out to the residential hall for assistance with this matter. I spoke with Mr. Brock Taylor, and he took her name and began to research the situation at hand. At 4:15 he called my niece and advised her to come back to the Moody Tower after he was able to locate her key. I'm glad my family was able to experience the Cougar compassion and willingness that Mr. Brock showed my family, they told me they were extremely impressed. And are assure that their daughter has chosen the right school.”

She even offered to continue helping when that coworker returned. I am so thankful to have her on my team!”

“Amanda is always so very helpful and kind. She advised my students while I was away on medical leave and was amazing. She's a great academic advisor and great teammate.”

“Amanda Wysinger's kindness and care for students on top of her work ethic make her a standout staff member.  From bringing two boxes of donuts on the first day of school to volunteering on the commencement committee to stepping up when a coworker was on maternity leave, Amanda spares no effort to ensure her coworkers and students are supported. She knows how to be a professional and how to let loose in the office. I enjoy working and learning from Amanda and look forward to to the many laughs and successes to come!”

  • Hector Bonilla

    Contracts Reporting Manager, Purchasing

"It is an honor and a privilege to nominate Mr. Hector Bonilla for the Cougar Cudos.  Hector has been with UH over 7 years and with Finance/Controller’s office in the role of Contract Reporting Manager since November 2018, his contributions is commendable and has not gone unnoticed, (especially in my short span of my time here at UH).  Hector not only continues to make extraordinary contributions daily in his role as Contract Reporting Manager, but goes the extra mile in extending and volunteering to learn and assist other departments, and on various special projects such as the Tax Office department (currently with only one staff member)  by learning the new TAX software for Foreign treaty reviews and assisting foreign students; Ad-Hoc analysis related to Historically Underutilized Business (HUB) Reporting; collaborate and partner with seven other team members to learn and prepare fiscal note responses by interpreting bills, identifying fiscal impact, cost estimates, etc., for the 87th Legislative Session; Human Resources with queries on vendors; Print Shop and Copy Services by developing new billing rates for the University Print Shop that would allow the department to break-even and allocate funds for equipment replacement and reserves; Accounts Payable with testing and implementation of the new Vendor Management System (PaymentWorks) used by all UH campuses; and serve our study body, faculty and staff with tax related and/or procurement/contract questions.  He lives the core mission of the university by serving his customers daily.

Hector is self-motivated and takes the initiative to not only learn new tasks, but goes above and beyond in training and assisting the rest of the team members with a positive attitude and a genuine heart to serve.  Hector has a passion to serve and is always eager to listen, learn and look for opportunities to enhance his knowledge and skills.  With some encouragement and guidance, he is now pursuing his Master’s degree to soar to greater heights in his professional career. Although early on he was involved with university events such as the 'students move-in' events, he plans to continue being involved with the university community in serving and volunteering at university events .

Hector has consistently impressed me and the rest of the leadership and the staff by his performance and positive attitude towards people and work. These extraordinary efforts and consistent contributions towards the success of the A&F division and the university as a whole makes him the extraordinary person who deserves a recognition. Hector exemplifies the quality of a dedicated staff with professionalism, personal integrity and a humble spirit to serve.  We all love Hector and want to let him know that ‘He is the BEST’"

  • HVAC Techs Go Above and Beyond in Critical Time

    Willy Vazquez

Journey HVAC Mechanic, Facilities Operation and Maintenance

    John Robinson

Journey HVAC Mechanic, Facilities Operation and Maintenance

“I wanted to make you aware of the extraordinary support from 2 HVAC techs, John Robinson and Willy Vazquez

As you may know, we were called out to SR1 Monday evening to respond to a power outage of the whole building. When James Roberts and myself arrived at the basement there were over 12-18 inches of water and the pumps were not running due to a failure of an ATS. John and Willy closed the steam valve while James and I got the ATS into emergency to power the sump pumps.

The water had risen high enough to cause a short circuit on 2 bottom 600amp breakers and the 3000 amp main also tripped. John and Willy located the source of much of the water coming from the break tank and closed the clay valve. After doing what they could on their equipment they asked what they could do to assist the electric shop.

They helped us push water to the drains, brought us some fans to start drying out the breaker cubicles, assisted with lifting the breakers out and changing the trip units, finding some 2X4’s that we needed to get the 3000 amp main to close.

Their willingness to help in every way possible enabled us to get the building power back on safely and much quicker than would have been possible otherwise.

Willy and John should be commended for going above and beyond their normal responsibilities and truly being part of the TEAM that is UH Facilities.”

  • Innovative thinking amidst extraordinary circumstances

    Kim Clark

    Executive Director, Campus Recreation

    Shenae Champ

Office Supervisor, UH Children's Learning Centers

    Cecilia “Cece” Hernandez

Assistant Director, UH Children's Learning Centers

    Rachel O'Mara

    Associate Director, Operations, Campus Recreation

    Jennifer Skopal

    Director, UH Children's Learning Centers

“The Children's Learning Center (CLC) Wheeler Campus was significantly impacted by Winter Storm Uri. In order to continue operations, the CLC collaborated with Campus Recreation to reopen in their space until repairs were complete at Wheeler. As a CLC parent, this transition was seamless. It was amazing for the kids and teachers that the CLC was able to open in the temporary Campus Recreation space until the Wheeler campus was ready, providing a sense of normalcy and comfort in an already turbulent year.

Jennifer Skopal's communication was excellent, consistent, and clear and I always knew that my child was in good hands with Cece Hernandez and Shenae Champ at drop off and pick-up.

Rachel O'Mara and Kim Clark from Campus Recreation should be recognized for their effort in making space available for the CLC. I know this was not easy to coordinate and required many stakeholders. CLC administration and teachers as well as Campus Recreation employees worked in harmony to make this happen. This example of resilience, leadership and innovative thinking to an extraordinary circumstance must be recognized.”
