I have been admitted and want to talk to an Academic Advisor. How do I do that?

Your assigned academic advisor will reach out with more information closer to orientation. Until then, if you have questions prior to orientation, please sign up for a Welcome Session, where an advisor will be present.

How do I register for classes? When do I register for classes? What do I register for?

You will receive an email from your advisor this summer with information on how and for what courses to register. If you haven’t received an email from your advisor by the end of July, please email gcswinfo@uh.edu. You may receive general communications prior to July from the university encouraging you to enroll; however, please wait for your advisor’s instructions before enrolling. If you have an enrollment hold, please follow the instructions provided to remove the hold(s) before you can register for classes.

I have a Prior Degree Verification Hold on my account, but I already sent my official transcript to UH.

Please contact the UH Graduate School directly to inquire about the status of your transcript. The GCSW Staff cannot see that your transcript has been received until the UH Graduate School has uploaded it to your application. They will send a Degree Verified Email Notification once they have processed your official transcript and verified you have a bachelor's degree.

What will my schedule look like as a new MSW student?

Face to Face Foundation students will be in class from about 8:30 am to 4:00pm Wednesdays and Thursdays, with a lunch break between classes. This leaves Monday, Tuesday, and Friday available for practicum and part-time work (16-20 hours/week of practicum are required during daytime weekday hours primarily). NOTE: Full-Time work commitments are strongly discouraged for full-time MSW students.

Hybrid students take courses that are delivered both online and face-to-face and are in class 1-2 Saturdays each month at the Sugar Land campus. Saturday classes are scheduled in advance and will last the entire day, 9:00am-4:00pm. Lunch is typically provided on Saturdays. Some of the online classes may require synchronous online meetings scheduled M-F in the evening. The only exception to these arrangements is Foundations of Social Work, which will take place the Friday before the first semester begins. Practicum hours (16 hours/week minimum) and coursework will be completed at times when students are not in class. Students must have flexibility in their schedule during business hours. NOTE: There is no guarantee of a placement with only evening/weekend hours.

How can I change my enrollment model?

Enrollment model changes are not guaranteed and are approved based on space availability. Fill out the Enrollment Model Change Request Form to request an enrollment model change and a GCSW staff member will be in touch with you.

I am unable to attend the semester for which I was admitted. Can I defer my admission until next year?

You can request a 1-year deferral, subject to availability. If you cannot attend after the 1-year deferral period, you must reapply for admission. Please submit the Deferral Request Form and a GCSW staff member will contact you with more information.

How much does it cost to attend?

I have questions about my residency status/I would like to appeal my residency status.

Residency status is determined by the Office of the University Registrar. You can find more information at https://uh.edu/undergraduate-admissions/apply/residency/

Are there scholarships available to MSW students?

The GCSW does offer a number of scholarships to MSW students. The 2024-25 application for newly admitted students can be found at https://forms.office.com/r/n6Lkeh77ed. This application covers all of the awards listed HERE, unless otherwise stated.

Please note: GCSW Scholarships are separate from the Federal Financial Aid program. Please complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for Federal Financial Aid.

Is the Confirmation Fee refundable?

Unfortunately, the confirmation fee is nonrefundable, as is stated in both the decision letter and the decision response form that you complete when you confirm. Fees go toward important student services, such as orientation, student engagement, and student events. Please reach out to us at gcswinfo@uh.edu if you have any questions.
