DDoS attacks: The Old and the New

When: Monday, April 23, 2018
Where: PGH 232
Time: 11:00 AM

Speaker: Kevin Long, University of Houston

Host: Dr. Omprakash Gnawali

Denial-of-Service Attacks have existed since 1974, when a high school student shut down CERL’s systems at UIUC. It’s been downhill ever since. In this talk, we take a look back at how DDoS attacks have evolved over the last 40+ years, what some of the more recent attacks teach us about effective mitigation, and consider whether we’re making progress in preventing attacks. We will examine the move towards cloud-based defense networks, remediation providers, and recovery times as a metric by which to gauge progress.
