Many popular online services and websites (e.g., NetFlix, YouTube, and Facebook) provide rich video, text, and other content to their users. They use technologies broadly called Content Distribution Network (CDN) to quickly, efficiently, and cost-effectively distribute their content around the world. In this talk, I will give an overview of CDNs. Then I will describe real-world insights about how CDNs work today and what challenges they face. I will also touch upon some non-technical issues CDN companies grapple with in their quest for global growth.
