When: Friday, February 14, 2014
Where: PGH 232
Time: 11:00 AM

Speaker: Prof. Ioannis Pavlidis

Faculty Panel: Ernst Leiss, Computer Science, University of Houston and Prof. Ricardo Azevedo, Biology, University of Houston

Host: Prof. Ioannis Pavlidis

This will be a mixed talk-panel event. In the talk I will address the role and importance of seminars in doctoral education and their connection with the evolving nature of science and academia. Then, I will give examples of seminar cultures in departments belonging to universities of different ranks. I will close my talk by citing some anecdotal stories from my personal record and how seminars helped me to build my own career.

Following my talk, I will moderate a panel discussion on the matter. The panel members will be Prof. Ernst Leiss (Computer Science-University of Houston) and Prof. Ricardo Azevedo (Biology-University of Houston) who bring two valuable perspectives: the first as a devoted seminar attendee and participant and the second as organizer of several successful seminar series. The audience will have the opportunity to participate in this discussion.
