Lab Safety Guide for PIs

Principal Investigators have ultimate responsibility for the laboratory spaces and personnel under their supervision. Consequently, the responsibility for the safety of the laboratory personnel, students, visitors also rests with the Principal Investigator, which is accomplished by performing hazard assessment of the laboratory, reviewing laboratory work practices, inspecting laboratory space to proactively identify and correct hazardous conditions,  developing standard operating procedures and implementing sound engineering and administrative controls. See the Laboratory Safety Manual for a listing of PI responsibilities.

To receive prompt assistance from Environmental Health and Safety, PIs must register their laboratories spaces with EHS. To register your laboratory, complete the New Laboratory Assessment and Registration Form.
