For many students, being the first in their family to attend college comes with unique challenges — from navigating unfamiliar systems to finding mentors to building a support network. The University of Houston is offering a chance to hear directly from those who have been there. On March 11, 2026, the First-Generation Staff Panel: “First to Rise: Stories that Guide, Voices that Inspire” will bring together UH leaders who once faced the same journey and have turned their experiences into success.
The panel features a diverse group of professionals who will share personal stories of resilience, challenges, and triumph. Attendees will gain insights on how to navigate college life and build a fulfilling career. Panelists include:
- Kathleen Guzman – Program Manager, Center for Student Empowerment
- Gabriel Jackson – Program Manager, Division of Student Affairs
- Karl Hearne – Assistant Administrative Executive, Neighborhood & Strategic Initiatives
- Monica Thompson – Executive Director, Career Services
- Donell Young – Associate VP for Student Affairs & Dean of Students
- Kyle Mutz – Director, Justin Dart, Jr. Student Accessibility Center
- Stephen Netzley – Program Manager, Veteran Services
“What I wish I knew as a first-generation student,” notes one panelist, “was the importance of asking for help and seeking mentors. That advice changed everything for me.” Students will have the chance to submit questions in advance, ensuring the discussion addresses the topics that matter most.
This event is more than a panel — it’s an opportunity to connect with first-generation professionals, learn from their journeys, and gain practical strategies for overcoming obstacles. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni are all encouraged to participate. Attendees will also have the chance to win door prizes and free giveaways, adding a fun and engaging element to the conversation.
To join the conversation, RSVP for the panel here, and submit your questions ahead of time here. Additional resources for first-generation students can be found on the Center for Student Empowerment’s First-Gen page.
From navigating college life to building meaningful careers, the First-Gen Staff Panel promises stories that inspire and guidance that empowers — a chance to learn from those who rose first so you can rise next.
