Cougar Woods Tackles Summer Projects to Elevate Campus Dining

By Robert Hackett

cougarwoods refreshWhile summer often signals downtime for many, it’s full steam ahead at Cougar Woods Dining Commons. Crews arehardat work on a series of transformative upgrades, including Phase II refresh, air curtain installation, generator integration, and general facility improvements such as new cabinetry, HVAC exhaust fan replacements, and enhanced lighting.

Phase II Refresh: Designing for Engagement

Building on the success of Phase I, which expanded dining options and vibrant graphics- the Phase II refresh focuses on creating engaging spaces tailored to diverse student needs.

“I’m truly excited about the Phase II refresh of Cougar Woods Dining Commons,” said Alexcis Mendoza, district marketing director, UH Dinning Services. “This is one of the students’ favorite places on campus, and the thoughtful enhancements — such as the distinct dining zones — show we’re listening to their needs.”

The new layout divides the facility into two distinct zones:

  • Library-style zone (right side): Offers a quiet space for studying or unwinding, complete with banquette seating for a more private dining experience.
  • Social zone (left side): Features community-style seating with high and low tables to encourage interaction and engagement.

Infrastructure Upgrades: Power, Comfort, and Sustainability

A major infrastructure investment includes the installation of a backup generator, shifting Cougar Woods’ energy source from CenterPoint to the university’s own power grid. This ensures uninterrupted service during emergencies and enhances operational resilience.

“We continuously assess our spaces to ensure that we are able to provide service during emergency situations,” said DaNesha Allen, senior director, Auxiliary Services. “This investment is another way in which we safeguard our facilities to meet the needs of the campus community.”

Additionally, an air curtain has been installed above the main entrance to maintain indoor climate control and prevent pests from entering. The curtain creates an invisible barrier of air that activates with door movement- an essential but often unnoticed feature in dining operations.

The refresh also includes:

  • New millwork and tiling
  • Upgraded furniture
  • Improved lighting
  • Exterior facade and window cleaning as part of summer maintenance efforts.

A Dining Experience That Connects

The overarching goal is to offer well-balanced meals in a customized environment that supports student wellness, connection, and academic success.

Looking ahead, Cougar Woods Dining Commons is poised to become not just a place to eat but a destination for community, comfort, and campus pride.
