Admission, Change of Major to Pre-Business, and Course Limits
Qualified high school, college transfer students, and international students interested in majoring in business should apply directly to the University of Houston, designating "Pre-business" as their choice of major on their UH application. For admission information and an application, contact the Office of Admissions at 713-743-1010 or check the Web site at www.uh.edu/admissions.
Freshman Criteria:
Requirements for admission into UH as a Pre-business/UH Bauer College of Business student are higher than standard UH admission requirements. To see if a student will qualify to be a business major, visit the UH Office of Admission's Admissions Criteria webpage and scroll to the Special Major Requirements section of the page.
If a student meets all requirements, they will be admitted as "Pre-Business". It is important to keep in mind that every freshman student starts out as Pre-business - students in UH Bauer College of Business do not declare their major until their late sophomore/early junior year.
High school students who do not currently meet criteria for admission in UH Bauer College but do meet standard UH admission requirements are invited to gain admission into UH Bauer College via internal change of major requirements (see below) after they matriculate at UH.
Transfer of Internal Change of Major Criteria:
The criteria for a transfer student or UH non-business student with 15-60 semester hours of college credit to be admitted to the Bauer College of Business as a pre-business major are A) a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average, including any attempted transfer courses, and B) if any courses have been attempted at the University of Houston, at least a 2.5 or higher cumulative grade point average at the University of Houston. Students with more than 60 semester hours of college credit must meet the same criteria, but the calculation of cumulative grade point average is based on the last 60 hours (if the 60th hour occurs in the middle of a semester, all grades of that semester are included in the calculation).
UH students who have submitted transcripts of all completed college work to the University of Houston may submit a change of major request on the UH Bauer College web site during designated filing periods: www.bauer.uh.edu/prospective.
Course Limitations:
Enrollment by non-business students in business courses is limited to ACCT 2331 and 2332; MIS 3300, INTB 3351 and 3352; ENTR 3310 and 3312; and MARK 3337, unless they are an officially declared business minor taking courses appropriate to that minor or have been admitted into a business-related program such as the computer science-business option, the professional selling program or exchange programs, who are taking business courses to meet specified requirements for these business-related programs.
Enrollment by pre-business majors in business courses is limited to ACCT 2331 and 2332; MIS 3300, INTB 3351 and 3352; ENTR 3310 and 3312; and MARK 3337, unless they approved by their pre-business academic advisor for a mixed program, a one or two semester transition for students to take 3000-level business courses while completing their requirements to file a degree plan. Generally pre-business majors on College Academic Notice (a UH GPA below 2.5) are not approved for a mixed program.
Students with a GPA of less than 2.0 (freshman academic notice or probation) are not eligible to take 3000 and 4000-level business courses.
Postbaccalaureate students are not eligible to take undergraduate business courses except at the 5000-level, unless they are a business minor and taking courses appropriate to that minor or have been admitted into a business-related program and are taking business courses to meet specified requirements for these business-related programs. Postbaccalaureate students may not pursue a B.B.A. in the Bauer College of Business.
