UH Hosts Inaugural Ascending Leaders Forum

Junior and senior high school students from around the region converged at the University of Houston for the Ascending Leaders Forum held Wednesday, Nov. 20. Hosted by UH, the Forum provided almost 500 students and educators an up-close introduction to the opportunities for academic and professional growth available to them at the University.

Student Centers Celebrates UH Class Ring Unveiling

The Student Centers celebrated the unveiling of the UH Class Ring statue on Friday, November 15, 2019. Located in the Legacy Lounge, the bronzed ring replica was donated from Balfour and is a collaborative effort between the UH Alumni Association and the Student Centers to help tell the story of the class ring tradition on campus.
The Student Centers Policy Board recommended this addition to the Student Centers. “We are so excited to have the UH ring statue here in the Student Centers! As both the Student Centers Policy Board Chair and a proud ring holder, I hope students and all Student Centers visitors enjoy this new tradition and addition to our facility,” says Christopher Caldwell, 2019 Chair of the Student Centers Policy Board. Students, alumni and guests are encouraged to take their photos in front of the UH Class Ring as a new on-campus tradition.

Student Centers Policy Board Accepting Applications for At-Large Member

The Student Centers Policy Board is now accepting applications for an at-large member position. The deadline to apply is November 8, 2019 and the application form can be found on Get Involved.

Film Series Presents: Shazam!

The Student Centers Film Series started off with a BANG! with the screening of Shazam! in collaboration with the Center for Student Empowerment. Over 230 students attend the Fall premier film as part of the Student Centers Welcome Back event during Weeks of Welcome. At the conclusion of the film, students engaged in a panel discussion with the Center for Student Empowerment to discuss about foster youth representation and resources available to them at UH.

Student Centers Welcome Back

The Student Centers welcomed students back to campus with their Student Centers Welcome Back event. This superhero themed event took approximately over 400 students throughout the Student Centers in search of Infinity Stones as a way to learn about the resources and programs the Student Centers has to offer. Caricature artists turned students into their favorite superheroes and sweet treats such as cookies, Spiderman cupcakes, and ice cream from Shasta's Cones & More were provided along the way. After collecting all six Infinity Stones students received a T-shirt were entered into a raffle for the grand prize giveaway – a Smart TV!

Eve Esch, Director of Student Centers Wins the Edward S. "Beanie" Drake Founders' Award

Eve Esch was recognized at the 2019 Association of College Unions International (ACUI) Annual Conference in March with the Edward S. "Beanie" Drake Founders' Award. This award recognizes an individual in the midst of their career who has exemplified the values and mission of their institution and ACUI. This award intends to inspire recipients by providing financial support for an educational activity that will develop them as a leader. Additionally, the award is given to individuals who are involved on their campus beyond their direct area or department, contribute significantly to further their institution mission and be held in high esteem by colleagues and peers at their institution and within ACUI.

The University of Houston was also recognized for being a member institution for over 25 years.

Student Center's Creation Station Takes Home Various Awards from ACUI

Multiple Creation Station student employees took home multiple awards in the Association of College Unions International (ACUI)'s Steal This Idea competition, an annual contest to find the best marketing and promotional ideas across the association.

Nick Peterson received first place in the T-shirt category for the Games Room T-shirt, along with an honorable mention in the brochure category for the Cougars in Recovery brochure. Julia Ong's Friends of Women's Studies invitations earned first place in the cards and invitations category, and Kevin Marroquin's 2018 Panhellenic Booklet took second place in the multi-page publication category. Jessy Gilbert received third place in the logos/brand identity category for the Strides to Zero logo, and Gilbert and Kenny Law received an honorable mention in the interior/wall art category for their Wellness Center Classroom decals.

Student Centers Hosts "Latino Art Now!" Conference & Exhibit

The Student Centers will be hosting Latino Art Now!, showcasing art pieces from some of the most internationally recognizable names in Latino/a/x visual art. Joining us are art educators, scholars, curators, collectors, dealers and rising stars from Houston's vibrant art scene for the conference happening April 4th- 6th. In addition to the conference, some of the art pieces will be on display in various locations around the 2nd floor of the Student Center South building throughout April.

Student Centers Hosts "The Stair Observation Project"

In partnership with the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design, the Student Centers is excited to host an exhibition of architecture models of the Student Center South done by ARCH 1501 (Design Studio II) students through the month of March. The exhibition comes from an assignment done by Architecture and Interior Architecture first-year students meant to introduce them to the practice of observation, field measurement, documentation, & analysis. The first part of the project required students to freehand sketch their observations of stairs at the Student Center South. Then, they transitioned to an analytical assessments of the stairs, using models and experimentation. These exercises are meant to allow students to realize and distinguish the differences between the exterior and interior enclosures.The exhibit will be on display until March 29th and is located adjacent to the Information Center, overlooking the Monumental Stairs.

I 'Heart" My Student Centers

The Student Centers hosted its signature event I ‘Heart’ My Student Center on Thursday, February 14 from 12:00 – 2:00 pm in the Student Center South. The event consisted of four unique interactive photo experiences and approximately 300 students were in attendance. Additionally, cupcakes, cake pops, hot chocolate, ice cream from Shasta’s Cones & More as well as T-Shirts were provided to students. Students were given a chance to enter a photography contest based on the creativity of photos they took at the event. The grand prize giveaway was a Polaroid camera & film package.

Student Centers Celebrates Grand Opening of the Satellite and Mondo Subs

The start of the Spring semester brought additional dining options to the Student Centers. Both the newly renovated Student Center Satellite, offering 10 dining options, and Mondo Subs in Student Center South, featuring fresh baked bread, halal chicken, and a variety of other healthy options, opened for business on Monday, January 14th. To celebrate, the Satellite and Mondo Subs Grand Openings took place on Wednesday, January 16th from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Students and staff celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony entertainment, giveaways and more.
