In this updated course, students are taught the necessary skills to successfully prepare for the licensing exam. Helpful tips will guide students toward concentrating their preparation in areas helpful to success. Handouts include practice test questions and answers that will help students develop confidence to take the exam. Students are taught the necessary skills to prepare for the DSM-5 section of the licensing exam. There are intensive reviews of major topics with particular attention to DSM-5. Handouts and practice tests for the LMSW, LMSW-AP, and LCSW exams are included. Students develop the necessary confidence to take the exam.

Upon concluding this course, participants will be able to:

  • List the values and standard areas in the NASW code of ethics.
  • List the primary concepts for at least 3 different theories of psychosocial development.
  • List at least 3 theoretical frameworks for direct social work practice with individuals, families, and groups.

About the Instructor: 

Patricia Taylor, Ph.D., LCSW is a licensed clinical social worker and approved Texas LCSW supervisor who has practiced in the Houston area and taught clinical courses at the University of  Houston Graduate College of Social Work for the last 12 years.  She is currently Curriculum Coordinator for the Child Welfare Education Project and adjunct faculty member at the University of Houston Graduate college of Social Work.  She presented numerous workshops for the Protective Services Training Institute of Texas and presented research by invitation at professional meetings.  She is also highly experienced at teaching Intermediate/Clinical Level Exam Prep.

This is a Part 3 of four-part series on trauma and dissociation. Each part of the series is a stand-alone training, but in it’s entirety the series will deepen the participant’s knowledge of assessing and treating trauma and dissociation in adults. In Part 3, the focus will be on assessment and treatment of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Dissociative Disorders.   

Upon concluding this course, participants will be able to:

  • Compare various assessment tools for trauma and dissociation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of effective treatment interventions for Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
  • Apply strategies for effectively working with clinically significant dissociation.

About the Instructor:

Laila Narsi, LCSW, CMMT, EMDR Approved Consultant & Therapist, received her MSC at U of H GCSW in 1997. She specializes in CPTSD, Disassociate Identity Disorders, sexual assault, and personality disorders since the start of her career, she worked as director of both outpatient and inpatient Psychiatric hospitals in Houston then moved onto private practice. Some of the certifications Laila holds are  in EMDR Therapy, EMDR Consultant, Mindful Self-Compassion, Fierce Self-Compassion Course, International Mindful Meditation Professional Level. In 2022, along with Dr. Chris Germer at Harvard University, she co-developed the Self-Compassion for Shame Program which is globally taught. For the last 15 years, she also organizes and leads global retreats in person and virtual on topics of  mindfulness, MSC, Shame, Burn Out, and trauma in addition to sitting on the international board for CMSC’s DEIBJ committee.   Ms. Narsi is a dedicated advocate and volunteer for mental health not just in the Greater Houston Area, but globally as well.

About the Instructor:

Karen Sullivan, LCSW-S, RPT-S, EMDR Approved Consultant, is a graduate of UH – GCSW.  She began her career as a caseworker and supervisor at CPS in  Sexual Abuse units.  She then worked as a therapist at advocacy centers in both Harris and Fort Bend Counties. In the last 13 years of private practice, Karen continues to specialize in trauma, grief, sexual assault, and attachment.  She frequently testifies on these matters in both civil and criminal courts.

Sleep complaints are common in mental health care. Most therapists recommend sleep hygiene or refer for a sleep study, both of which are appropriate in some cases and profoundly unhelpful in others. This presentation will educate clinicians about the biology of sleep, highlight factors that interfere with sleep, and give an overview of sleep disorders and how they can be managed behaviorally. Participants will walk away with a solid foundation of knowledge from which to assess and make appropriate recommendations for their clients with sleep complaints.

Upon concluding this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the 2-process model and how each process impacts sleep.
  • Give a brief overview of normal sleep architecture.
  • Articulate the proper place of sleep hygiene advice in working with sleep complaints.
  • Summarize major sleep disorders and their treatments.

About the Instructor: 

Jessica Fink, LCSW-S is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker-Supervisor based in Austin, TX, with 18 years of experience in the mental health field. She spent 14 years at a psychiatric hospital in Austin, where she worked in inpatient and intensive outpatient settings. In 2021, Jessica transitioned to full-time private practice, where she specializes in sleep, chronic pain, OCD, PTSD, and RODBT. Jessica considers herself a therapist for the rule followers. She favors structured, evidence-based approaches with clear goals and agendas. Outside of her clinical work, Jessica enjoys immersing herself in the world of musical theater, watching reruns of The Golden Girls, and rocking out to 90s alternative rock. An avid traveler, she has a personal goal of visiting all 50 states and all 7 continents in her lifetime, intending to learn something new in each place she visits.

This six-hour highly interactive clinical supervision training is designed to meet the requirements of the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council for Licensed Clinical Social Work Supervisor.  The training will focus on three major areas:  providing updates on pertinent aspects of the licensing rules related to clinical supervision in social work, emphasizing key components of the clinical supervisory relationship, process, and phases of work; and focusing on contemporary perspectives/content related to clinical supervision as a field of practice.  Participants will be invited to actively participate in sharing challenges, seeking guidance, and developing peer connections.

This is a hands-on course in group psychotherapy using both psychodynamic and CBT techniques. It's both experiential and didactic. Class volunteers will become a group, and the remainder of the attendees will become the observers. The didactic and discussion portion will occur each hour at the conclusion of each of four group encounters. The facilitators will de-construct the group process as it occurs. Psychodynamics, including family/cultural/social back stories and CBT interventions will be pointed out. How the facilitators managed the group process is a teaching point.

Upon concluding this course, participants will be able to:

  • Cite the dynamic defenses that emerged during the group sessions
  • Identify the interventions used by the leaders to promote group progress through the stages of formation
  • Identify the techniques of facilitation that produced growth

About the Instructors:

Andrew Krieger, DSW, MBA, LCSW-S, LCDC, is a private practice psychotherapist with extensive experience in direct practice social work, clinical program design and development, addiction treatment and group psychotherapy. He has held clinical positions at some of the leading addiction treatment programs in Texas and has served in executive roles in top companies across multiple industries. He received his Doctor of Social Work from the University of Southern California, and his Masters of Clinical Social Work and Masters of Business Administration from the University of Houston. Dr. Krieger has also worked for over 15 years with individuals and families as a private practice and group psychotherapist, specializing in addictive disorders, family therapy, group psychotherapy and process addictions.

Richard Newman, MEd, LPC-S, LMFT-S, CGP, AGPA-F, is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor and a Marriage and Family Therapist Supervisor, who has been treating clients for over forty years. He is a Certified Group Psychotherapist, a National Certified Counselor, a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor, and a Fellow of the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA-F). He has been active in Houston Group Psychotherapy Society in various leadership roles, and he has worked with the National Board of Certified Counselors in past years. He has experience with inpatient, agency, and outpatient practice as a clinician, a supervisor, and an administrator. He has specialized in working with adolescents, and, in doing so, he has done considerable family and marital therapy work. He has led groups for children, adolescents, adults, and marital couples over his clinical career, and he has participated in teaching the AGPA Principles Course.

Therapists increasingly encounter mindfulness in practice, yet without cultural context it risks appropriation. This course provides therapists with an introduction to mindfulness’s history and core concepts—and their connection to Buddhism. Participants will gain appreciation of distinct populations by learning to contextualize mindfulness within its authentic roots, avoiding cultural appropriation and strengthening therapeutic ethics. The session includes experiential meditation practices alongside discussion of practical applications for diverse spiritual backgrounds of clients. Designed to meet the CEU requirement of working with distinct populations, this course supports clinicians in integrating mindfulness and Buddhist-informed perspectives into practice respectfully and skillfully.

Upon concluding this course, participants will be able to:

  • Learn the cultural and historical context of mindfulness and its relevance for therapy.
  • Identify at least three core concepts of Buddhism relevant to mindfulness practice.
  • Explain how to integrate Buddhist-informed concepts into therapy with cultural appreciation.

About the Instructor:

Nhu-Mai Nguyen, LCSW-S, is an ordained student of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh with more than 15 years of mindfulness training, including a year of monastery residency and nationwide teaching tours. She integrates authentic, culturally grounded mindfulness into clinical practice and education. Nhu Mai currently works as a clinical counselor at Rice University, where she helps students work through issues of perfectionism, shame, and belonging. She trained extensively in DBT at The PRISM Center, has experience treating severe depression, trauma, and anxiety, and is pursuing EMDR certification. As a board-approved supervisor, she mentors LMSWs in developing clinical expertise.

The 40 hour Clinical Supervision Course is designed for Licensed Clinical Social Workers who are interested in fulfilling licensing requirements to become a LCSW Supervisor (as set forth by the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners 781.102) and in advancing their knowledge, skills, and experience in clinical social work supervision. *

*BHEC TSBSWE requires LCSW licensure for 2 years before receiving supervisor status.

*This course will not satisfy the requirements for a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) to receive BHEC approved Clinical Supervisor designation.

Adults with ADHD frequently experience executive functioning deficits that hinder self-regulation and heighten anger. This presentation examines how inattention, difficulty initiating tasks, dysregulation when tasks lack stimulation, and time blindness result in uncompleted tasks and recurring frustration, often internalized as self-directed anger. Using evidence-based interventions, the workshop integrates parts work, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), metacognitive approaches, somatic work, and the constraint-led approach to provide clinicians with a comprehensive toolkit. Attendees learn strategies to recognize and understand their clients’ symptoms, develop effective coping skills, and improve organization and environmental modifications. Overall, clinicians gain practical tools to help clients lead more balanced and fulfilling lives, resulting in lasting change.

Upon concluding this course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize and understand their clients' symptoms before, during, and after episodes, enhancing mindfulness.
  • Develop effective coping skills to address emerging symptoms and improve emotional regulation.

A growing body of research supports what many professionals have already experienced with their own pets - that the human-animal bond can be emotionally, psychologically, and physically beneficial. This course offers a roadmap to mental health professionals considering taking the next step towards bringing the healing power of animals into their counseling. The fundamentals of Animal-Assisted Therapy will be covered by exploring the history of animals in counseling, clarifying terminology, discussing benefits and risks, and experiencing some AAT interventions.  

Research evidence supports that Animal-Assisted Therapy can be beneficial to a wide range of ages, genders, and cultures. It has been researched and is currently being provided in numerous countries. As such, it offers emotional healing to diverse clients. Additionally, animals typically interact with clients without consideration of their social, racial, economic, or political status, which gives clients an opportunity for genuine, healthy, therapeutic relationship. 

Upon concluding this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify characteristics of Animal-Assisted Therapy in Counseling and differentiate from other therapeutic applications of the human-animal bond 
  • List at least 3 research-based benefits of partnering with animals in counseling 
  • List at least 3 risks of including an animal in counseling and describe ways of mitigating those risks 
  • Identify at least 3 indicators of stress and at least 3 indicators of consent for canines and equines 
  • Describe at least 3 different animal-assisted counseling interventions 

About the Instructor:

Kim Sullivan, LPC, RPT, NCC, operates a solo private practice based in Round Rock, Texas, working with clients ages 3 to adult utilizing modalities including Child-Centered Play Therapy, expressive arts, sand tray, and animal-assisted counseling.  She teams up with her canine counseling partner, Barney, for the majority of her sessions.  Kim offers supervision for LPC-Associates and consultation for licensed counselors working towards their RPT certification, with her 3 donkeys joining in for equine-assisted supervision.  Kim is certified as an Animal-Assisted Counselor through Texas State University’s Animal-Assisted Counseling Academy (where she also serves as lead trainer), is Level 2 trained in Natural Lifemanship (a trauma-informed equine-based approach), and EMDR trained.  Kim previously served as Lead Trainer for Texas State University's Animal-Assisted Counseling Academy, now continuing her connection with the AAC Academy by serving as an AAC Team Evaluator.

This 6-hour workshop equips new MSW graduates with the knowledge and confidence to select a clinical supervisor who supports their professional growth and aligns with their values. Participants will explore the purpose and responsibilities of clinical licensure, review supervision models and agreements, and learn how to assess supervisor fit, ethics, and cultural responsiveness. The course covers fee structures, documentation, and hour tracking, as well as troubleshooting common supervision challenges. Through interactive discussions and experiential exercises, participants will develop practical tools for effective participation in supervision and build a foundation for ethical, empowered, and intentional clinical practice.

Upon concluding this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose, process, and ethical responsibilities of clinical licensure in social work, including motivations for pursuing advanced licensure and an overview of BHEC requirements.
  • Differentiate between supervision models and settings (on-the-job, external, group, individual, hybrid) and identify the advantages and limitations of each for new clinicians.
  • Identify key characteristics of effective supervisors and supervision relationships, including population fit, specializations, teaching styles, and cultural responsiveness.
  • Evaluate supervision logistics and ethics, including fee structures, supervision agreements, policies for illness or emergencies, and the ethical handling of rescheduling or termination.
  • Recognize the hallmarks of effective versus ineffective supervision, including appropriate boundaries, feedback practices, supervisor liability, and how supervision prepares clinicians beyond test preparation.
