A Year in Reflection

A Year in Reflection with Dean Yarneccia D. Dyson

When I joined the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work (GCSW) as Dean, I did so with a clear sense of purpose: to advance academic excellence, foster innovation, strengthen organizational effectiveness, and create meaningful opportunities for our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners to thrive.

Leadership in higher education—and particularly in social work education—requires vision, intentionality, and a commitment to building strong relationships. Since beginning this journey, I have remained focused on fostering a culture rooted in collaboration, accountability, transparency, and shared purpose while positioning the GCSW for long-term success and national distinction.

One of the most meaningful aspects of this work has been engaging our College community in developing our strategic roadmap, Charting Our Path to Excellence.

Grounded in stakeholder engagement and informed by a futures-focused lens for social work education, Charting Our Path to Excellence reflects our collective aspirations and serves as a guide for advancing research, education, workforce development, community engagement, and student success.

At the same time, I have prioritized strengthening the College’s infrastructure and organizational capacity. This has included enhancing communication, expanding leadership structures, onboarding talented new faculty and staff, and improving systems and processes that better support our mission. I believe organizational excellence is foundational to academic excellence and essential to creating environments where people can thrive—a testament to this is reflected in the GCSW being named, “Organization Of The Year”, by the National Association of Social Workers-Texas Houston Area Branch.

I have also remained deeply committed to positioning social work as an essential partner within the broader health ecosystem at the University of Houston. Through collaboration across UH Health—which comprises the Andy and Barbara Gessner College of Nursing, Graduate College of Social Work, College of Medicine, College of Optometry, and College of Pharmacy, and interdisciplinary partnerships, we have expanded opportunities to strengthen workforce development, innovation, and integrated approaches that elevate the role of social work in addressing complex societal challenges, leading in policy analysis and policy development, as well as improving the health and well-being for all.

Throughout this journey, I have worked intentionally to elevate the visibility and impact of the GCSW through strategic partnerships, national engagement, community collaboration, and philanthropic momentum. I am especially proud of the ways our community has come together to invest in the future of social work education, including a successful Giving Day that reflected our shared commitment to student and faculty success, as well as securing new gifts, endowments, and other investments into our College.

Equally important has been strengthening a culture of scholarship, innovation, and leadership development across the College. We have increased opportunities for faculty engagement in research and scholarly activity, including expanding participation among non-tenure-track faculty. I remain deeply committed to supporting the growth and development of faculty, staff, and students through mentorship, leadership training, and intentional opportunities for professional and personal growth. of presentations and booth.

As I reflect on this journey, I remain inspired by what we are building together and energized by the possibilities ahead. While important work remains, I am proud of the foundation we continue to strengthen and optimistic about our future as we advance excellence and impact in social work education.

My leadership philosophy remains grounded in a guiding principle that continues to shape how I lead and serve: Lift As You Climb.

Warmly,
