Ashley Merwin Receives 2023 President’s Excellence Award

Executive Assistant to the VPR is recognized for over a decade of professional excellence.

Ashley Merwin, who serves as the executive assistant to the Vice President of Research in the Division of Research, has been honored with the esteemed President's Excellence Award. This distinguished recognition, presented by University of Houston President, Renu Khator, is given to individuals who have showcased exceptional service and made remarkable contributions in their respective fields.

Awards are given each year in five categories: Administrative and Professional, Office and Clerical, Technical, Service and Craft, Effective Leader, and the Charles F. McElhinney Award. The 2023 ceremony was held on Thursday, September 7, where Merwin was recognized for her excellence in the Administrative and Professional category.

The President's Excellence Awards acknowledge exceptional service, dedication, and contributions to the University that go beyond job requirements and expectations. The criteria for these awards include superior job performance, proficiency in areas of responsibility, and outstanding personal traits like dedication, loyalty, reliability, courtesy, honesty and initiative.

In her role, Merwin oversees and coordinates the daily operations of the DOR and serves as the central point of contact for the entire division. Merwin also manages a demanding calendar, coordinates meetings, events and trainings.

“She manages herself perfectly, being forward-thinking and taking the initiative to always plan in advance and anticipate delays and issues. Her positive attitude and trustworthiness create trust in the division, where faculty and staff can come to her with any issue and are treated with respect and confidentiality. UH is fortunate to have Ashley Merwin as an employee,” wrote UH professor Kaushik Rajashekara in his nomination.

Merwin earned her bachelor’s degree from Florida State University and a master’s degree from the University of Houston – Victoria in Business Administration. She joined UH in 2012.

“It is such a privilege to be a part of this institution that values and supports its employees. I am grateful to work with such inspiring leaders and colleagues and am excited to continue my journey at UH for years to come,” said Merwin.

The President's Excellence Award at the University of Houston stands as a meaningful symbol of gratitude and acknowledgment for individuals who surpass expectations in their efforts to contribute to the university's achievements. It serves as a testament to the extraordinary commitment and service demonstrated by the university's staff members.
