Program Benchmarks

The following programmatic benchmarks are used to determine if teacher candidates should pursue the traditional (undergraduate) pathway of teachHOUSTON. For alternative certification benchmarks, visit the ACP webpage.

Undergraduate Benchmarks

  • Pre-formal Admission
  • Post-formal Admission before Student Teaching
    • Maintained minimum of 2.50 GPA (cumulative and content)
    • Completed 150 FBEs for appropriate teachHOUSTON course
    • Began qualifying exam process
    • Successful completion of CUIN 4350
    • Elective option 1: BIOL, CHEM, or PHYS 4340
    • Elective option 2: CUIN 4361 or CUIN 4375 must be completed during Student Teaching/Residency
  • Near Student Teaching (See the Certification checklist for details)
    • Complete qualifying exams
    • Complete TExES exams
    • Apply for Texas certification
    • Successful completion of EDUC 4314 and 4315 with 490 or 750 FBE hours for one-semester or two-semester Student Teaching respectively

Field-Based Experience (FBE)

Undergraduate students must have adequate documentation of FBE hours. The following are the required FBE hours for each course for a total of 50 FBEs:

  • CUIN 2300 – 10 FBEs
  • CUIN 3351 – 20 FBEs  
  • CUIN 4350 – 20 FBEs
  • EDUC 4314 and 4315 – 490 (one-semester) or 750 (two-semester)

Timing of Clinical (Student) Teaching

Students should plan backwards from their intended clinical teaching semester to determine the appropriate time to apply. Clinical teaching should occur in your last 1-2 semester(s) at University of Houston. There are two options for clinical teaching with teachHOUSTON.

  • Yearlong Residency Candidates: Must be three semesters away from their projected student teaching semester.
  • One-Semester Candidates: Must be two semesters away from their projected student teaching semester.
