Two EAS Ph.D. Students Win Poster Awards at GeoGulf Conference

Ramos and Beltran Receive First and Third Place Respectively

Juan Pablo Ramos Vargas and Ruth Beltran, both Ph.D. candidates at the University of Houston’s Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, placed first and third respectively in the student poster competition of the 2023 GeoGulf meeting held April 23-25, 2023, at the Norris Conference Center in Houston.

GeoGulf 2023

The annual GeoGulf meeting is jointly sponsored by the Houston Geological Society, the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies and the Gulf Coast Section of the SEPM.

In previous years, the organizers of the GeoGulf meeting sponsored a single poster session that contained posters from professional participants along with the undergraduate and graduate posters. For the 2023 meeting, the meeting organizers decided to subdivide the posters into two competitions: one for professionals and one for undergraduate and graduate students.

Twenty posters were submitted to the competition by undergraduate and graduate students from UH, the University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, and Stephen F. Austin State University. Student posters were scored based on the overall appearance of the poster, quality of data and interpretations, oral summary of the poster by the presenter, and responses of the presenter to questions posed by the judges. The judging panel presented awards to the first, second and third place posters.

Juan Pablo Ramos Vargas – First Place

Juan Pablo Ramos Vargas

Ramos’ first-place poster, entitled “Hydrocarbon provinces and active petroleum systems in the southern Caribbean: Basement types, sources, reservoirs, and key exploratory plays in the area of offshore Panama and the Colombian Caribbean margin,” presented a summary of one chapter of his Ph.D. dissertation that includes interpretations of extensive 2D and 3D seismic reflection data tied to deepwater wells. His Ph.D. research is supervised by Paul Mann, EAS professor of geology, tectonics and petroleum geology.

Ruth Beltran – Third Place

Beltran’s third-place poster, entitled “Early Cretaceous, syn-rift tectonic controls on facies distribution of the Upper Barremian Coqueiros Formation, Campos basin, offshore Brazil,” is the first chapter of her Ph.D. dissertation that describes the source rocks and reservoirs in the deepwater external rift of the Campos basin which is a current focus of deepwater exploration in Brazil. Her Ph.D. research is also supervised by Mann.
