Scholarships

A variety of undergraduate scholarships exist within the university such those offered by the university, college and department. Scholarships also exist external to the university such as those provided by corporations, non-profits, and professional organizations. Prospective, incoming freshman, incoming transfer, and continuing students are highly encouraged to apply for all scholarships for which they are eligible.

For internal UH scholarships, state law requires that each student identify any relation to a current University of Houston Board of Regent member. A student who is related to a current member of the governing board of that institution is prohibited from receiving scholarships unless the scholarship is awarded exclusively based on academic merit or is an athletic scholarship.

Any scholarship counts as a financial resource and must be considered when constructing a student award package. Total student aid cannot exceed a student’s cost of attendance. The cost of attendance (COA) is an estimate of what it costs the typical student to attend the University of Houston. Your COA includes tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, transportation and personal expenses. University of Houston awards are subject to change depending on the entire student award package and the students’ COA.

COSC Undergraduate Scholarship

Computer Science (COSC) undergraduate scholarships are merit-based scholarships awarded for 1-2 long semesters (e.g. fall, spring). These scholarships are funded by various individual and industry donors to support the academic success of students. Visit the webpage for the application and additional details.

College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM)

NSM Scholarship Program

A variety of scholarships are available to incoming freshman and continuing undergraduate students. Only one application must be submitted to be considered for all scholarships listed. Visit the webpage for additional information and application.

NSM Alumni Association (NSMAA) Scholarship

This scholarship aims to encourage students to pursue studies in the sciences and mathematics at the University of Houston. Applicants must be incoming freshman or continuing undergraduate students. Visit the NSMAA website for additional information and application.

External Scholarships

  • Great Minds in STEM HENAAC Scholarship: addresses the immense need that the United States has to produce more domestic engineers and scientists. The goal of the program is to ensure STEM college retention with a 3.0 grade point average or higher; to guarantee college graduation with an undergraduate technical degree in four-five years; and, to contribute to Hispanic communities by producing STEM role models for future generations and securing the country's place as the finest technological leader in the world.
  • Microsoft Scholarship: Microsoft awards tuition scholarships and conference scholarships each year to encourage students to pursue studies in Computer Science and related STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) disciplines. Recipients for both scholarships will be awarded in recognition of their demonstrated passion for technology, academic excellence, and leadership while working to push the software industry forward.

  • Evolve IP Cloud Scholarship: Evolve IP, a cloud strategy company, has $1,000-2,000 scholarships available to students planning to attend or attending a 4-year university in the U.S., and majoring in Technology or Computer Science.

  • Varsity Tutors Scholarship: Varsity Tutors, a company that combines highly-credentialed experts with an advanced technology platform dedicated to live and personalized instruction, is offering a $200 scholarship monthly for anyone pursuing a college degree and are majoring in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics during the 2020 school year.

  • National Space Club/Foundation Keynote Speaker Scholarship: Since 2013, The National Space Club and Foundation has offered the opportunity for a student to give the keynote address at the National Space Club and Foundation's annual Goddard Memorial Dinner, one of the space industry's most prestigious gatherings. In addition to speaking at the Goddard Memorial Dinner, the individual selected will also receive a scholarship, in the amount of $10,000. The student must be a U.S. citizen, intend to pursue a career in the Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) fields, be academically strong and excel in public speaking.

  • Nextiva Business Scholarship: Nextiva, a business communications company in Arizona, wants to support aspiring students studying in fields related to Business or STEAM (science, tech, engineering, arts, math). The scholarship is open to all college and college-bound students residing in the United States, and recipients will receive $1,000 for the upcoming academic year.
